Help! Need Advice For Waterproofing Basement Walls
I don't know much about waterproofing foundations, I hope someone does.
I am currently finishing a basement, the foundation company who was contracted by me isnt showing up or answeing their calls (surprise surprise). I cant find anyone with time to do the work, and my sprayfoam guys and drywallers are coming in the next few days. I have to do it myself. I am hoping someone can give me some good sound advice on the proper steps to take in order to make the wall watertight. From what I understand, we need to dig it out down to the drain tile, Im assuming flush it while Im down there. Then some sort of bead needs to be put at the joint on footing. Next is using an elastomeric compund, then yellow jacket, and finally a beaded plastic sheathing. Backfill with 3/4 clean wash stone up to about 3 feet, cover with tar paper, and backfill dirt (compacting as I go) and grading it out. PLEASE let me know if Im missing anything, and what the best products to use are Many thanks in advance Cory |

Re: Help! Need Advice For Waterproofing Basement Walls
slightly different in my location,
1-dig down to footing 2-make sure wall is clean and dry 3-tar foundation, with special attention and connection between footing and wall 4-while tar is wet, install 2x8, 1 1/2'' rigid foam board, t&g 5-tar and membrane seams 6-allow to dry, backfill with gravel, or good bankrun 7-top 12'' with good soil.

Yeah...what gene said is pretty much what we do here in utah.....except for the foam board. Never seen anyone do that here except on slab foundations. Full basements just get tar sprayed on and then backfilled. You guys further north probably need that extra bit of insulation.

Re: Help! Need Advice For Waterproofing Basement Walls
where I is, we only backfills with ca. 12" of pea gravel, then dirt, dirt, dirt. The rock up to near the surface is a much better method.
Noone mentioned anything about drainage tile, etc. I assume you've got that under control. |

Not enough water in Utah to worry about drainage tile!!!! We don't do it here.

Re: Help! Need Advice For Waterproofing Basement Walls
check out the waterproofing product form Spec-Chem. I used their product to stop water from coming through a wall in my basement. I used their product in conjunction with repointing the wall, and installing a french drain in the interior (exterior isn't an option).
Their stuff worked very well. I have had good luck with their roofing products as well. |

Re: Help! Need Advice For Waterproofing Basement WallsGene has got it pretty much covered here. The ridged foam boards while adding to the insulation is also to stop the integrity of the tar from being compromised. The only difference here is, its back filled with a type of pea gravel up to grade and a kerb stone set about 2' from the house all the way round.
