Help ID'ing This Type Of Harness??

Several months ago, a specialty contractor was re-roofing a very tal church steeple in our area. They used this honkin' huge boom lift and tied ropes/block/tackle off to the top and sat in a type of a harness or swing that allowed them to work on the steeple.

Any idea this is called?? Has anyone ever used anything like it??

Thanks!!

steve

Boatswain's chair. Used also by window washers, painters, and linemen.

They have something similar at a local place out here called the Sybaris (www.sybaris.com), but they call them Taiwan baskets.

Only one time, attached to a beam trolley to service a wireway (changing thermocouple conductors) that was suspended over a processing line in a plating plant that I worked at. Honestly, I might have been able to wiggle the boom lift in, but I ws farming the job out that day so I used the boatswain's chair. Most everyone in the maintenance department was checked out on the boatswain's chair, but few had reason to use it. There were a couple of heavyweights that were probably best advised to not use it. It mostly just sat in it's footlocker in the maintenance shop. It was pretty old... I'd guess from the 60's. The safety man still gave it the old once over every year.

Yeah, I was in one once, not to work from but just to get carried from one boat to another in the North Sea. (Quite a ride!!) We called it the same thing, but spelled it "Bosun's Chair". Same root .

We use them all the time to paint light wells, when theres no chance of setting up a ladder.

We also use rope walks quite often. Pretty much the same setup but you have two sets of the block and tackle with a plank suspended between them.

I use one for going up boat masts to install antennas. Marine stores sell all kinds.
