Health Insurance

I am looking for a health insurance policy. It will only be covering me and later possiably my wife. I have diabeties and my pump supply's and medications are over $700 a month. I reciently recieved a letter stateing the the companys are not allowed to make me wait the 12 months for pre existing conditions. I figure at $700 a month I should be able to afford a decient policy for less then my meds.

My question is does anyone know of any good companys? I Been looking at BC/BS of Tennessee at $250 a month. Anyone have good or bad experiances they could share?

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Health Insurance

Ken,I fielded a similiar question a short time ago. We have always had a problem being self employed and having coverage that is worth a damn. It seems if you go with a group they raise the rates until it is unaffordable and members start dropping out.
We are currently doing our yearly shop and are likely going to a Blue Cross Blue Sheild plan. It is common in this area but could not be a company sponsored plan so we did not use it until that changed. It is still not great by any means.
Wish I had some good news for you but would be lying if I said I did

We are fed up with the coverage the poor and illegals get that we cannot buy?

Forgive me Ken, for I likely know not what I do ( in terms of inviting criticism for the question I'm about to pose).

On what basis have you come to believe that an insurance company will want, or otherwise be compelled, to offer you a policy at less than the cost of the benefits they can reasonably expect to provide? Is it your intention to conceal your existing treatment needs until benefits are required?

Re: Health Insurance

Not planning on hiding any treatment needs. But hey if it works. Seems like I get screwed enough with my inability to pay out this much cash for something thats needed to auctually keep me alive. It costs $130 for just 10 small capilary tubes that needs changed every 3 days. The $700 is just meds dosent include DR visits($139 a month, Hemoglobin A1C testing ($600 every 3 months), testing supplies ($150 a month)or anything like that. But auctually I was on state insurance because the meds are so expensive I couldnt pay them but cuts have made me unable to keep recieving them. Not to be mean here but the crack head on the corner still gets his medical insurance because he has no income but someone that works for a living but just can't keep up gets the boot. The state sent me a paper stateing that since I lost my insurance they made it illigal for the next 63 days for any company to refuse me insurance or charge extra rates in Tn. based on existing conditions. So far I have been quoted $250 a month from BC/BS of TN so im guessing it works. If not my only other options is to either make enough to pay for the supplies, food, houseing, clotheing, and other needed items which is a bit tough. Or go on disability with the qualifying diseases of Cronic obsesive pulmanary disfunction and diabeties.

If anyone knows of something I did not think about or know about like the newer health care accounts I would appreciate any info.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Health Insurance

I had no idea that the gov can make a co. charge a certain rate. That is odd.
I DO know about COBRA. that makes sure you can keep your current insurance for at least 6 months, but you will pay full price for it. Perhaps that is gonna be less.
you cannot be turned down for that.

Go to work for a big corporation, like Walmart, whose large employee pool (i.e., lots of employees) affords them the ability to offer low cost group health benefits.

Re: Health Insurance

Ken, you may want to check into an outfit called:

"National Association for the Self-Employed"

NASE

They offer some decent rates by pooling small biz owners and getting close to group type rates.

As for the particulars of your situation, you may want to talk to an independent insurance agent or other expert in this field.
