Health Insurance

I apoligize if this has been recently discussed?

It's that time of year again when health Ins. is comming due. I think the biggest problem with self employment (after the government) has got to be health insurance?
We seem to have a policy and after a year the rates soar...

The salesman try to tell you what they want you to hear.
Fortunately, my wife/accontant is well versed in asking the questions that make them cringe. Unfortunately our latest plan which we have had for a whopping 2 years has increased over $350 a month this year,

Aside from telling the wife to go work for Congress (Hillary did it) what can I do.

Or better yet... What the heck are you guys doing..... Make me look smart to my wife

I go through Regence Blueshield. For a family of 4 $519 a month. I rarely use it but my kids and wife need it.

For 2 adults and 1 child, we're paying Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia $390/mo., with a $2,500 deductible.

We don't pay anything for basic health coverage in Canada.
Or maybe I should say we pay a lot of taxes.

Is that a group policy Christine. We have been looking at Blue Cross now that their program allows the company to purchase the insurance. We had a salesman that told us Blue Cross was having trouble so we called the hospital and the bookeeping folks rated them highly. So far that is the way we are leaning???

Have you had the problem with the continuous rising premiums? It has been constant no matter which co. we have used to date.

Thanks for the reply

George you are talking to a British expatriate here. I fully understand the "free" health system
All my relatives have suplemental private plans so they can receive medical care.
When the government gets it....Well I better not say!

Do a Google search on Medical Saving Account (MSA).

Re: Health Insurance

Copusbuilder. No, our policy is an "independent" one, not a group policy. BCBS of Georgia is really our only option in this area of Georgia, so I can't say much about how they compare to other big insurance companies. They have upped our premiums about $200/mo every year and we have had to increase our deductible each time to keep things more affordable. I don't like them...but then again, I don't like any insurance company (even if I do use their services).

Re: Health Insurance

Joining the builder's association permits me to buy my health insurance (Blue Cross) through them for everyone in the company. Much cheaper than trying to buy a policy on my own, since there's 1000's of guys in that group. Might want to look into the builder's association in your area and see if they have a plan you can buy into.

One of the more important insurances, I feel, is short term disability. Especially if you're the primary bread-winner.

Re: Health Insurance

Me and my wife $160 a month but that is because she is an accountant for a corporation. But before she got the job with benefits. No insurance (Hey we are young) but I do feel a lot better now that we have it. Just in case I put another nail through my thumb

Re: Health Insurance

Christine, We live in a rural area and bcbs is what the hospital says most people here use. We understand the deductable concerns...Ticks you off a little!! We will look into it more,,Thanks

Md. That could be worth looking into?? Seems to me we went with a group one time and it was longer between increases. Will check it out,,Thanks for the suggestion..

Robert,,That's cheating. how can you let your wife work for a major corp.
I don't blame you there. My wife does our books and I keep telling her to go out and get a real job. Then she looks at me and suggest the same so I shut up?
Of course in a town of 7000 Super Walmart is about it. Keep the nails in the boards..customers get touchy when their decks are covered in red blood!!

Trust me, that's not the premium...that's only your contribution to the premium.

Oh I know that, and she corrected me. its not $160 a month, I thought it was $80 out of each check. It is only $80 total, $40 out of each check. But when we were looking before I know it was more than our car payment for just a basic plan. Unless you want a $10,000 deductable.
