Can you guys see this? Suppose that you absolutely could only work Monday through Thursday..... Guess what? You would still manage just fine.

Re: Had To Stop Working Today
Or you could choose to go to another municipality and work seven days a week. But you don't.
It's not much more than a choice each of us weighs and selects. We assess our priorities in life, and we labor accordingly.

Now that would be silly.... then I wouldn't have any time to go fishing.
I agree with you... all work and no play makes any contractor a grumpy guss |

Re: Had To Stop Working Today
Us drywallers get a set amount of days to complete a job. OK say a super or inspector orders us to leave a floor or half a house off for electricians, plumbers or hvac guys to make changes. They DON'T allow us more time even though the schedule has been wrecked!! The siding and trim is still being loaded ,IN OUR WAY,on Monday. I've overheard HOs badgering the super to "make" us work the weekend. When that same HO comes over to hassle us on a Sunday while we bust azz to finish another house I remind them that they INSISTED we work Sunday to finish THIER house!! If ordinance states we can't work Sundays then its a moot point and we don't work no matter WHO is whining.

Re: Had To Stop Working Today
You would honestly think with the hundreds of TV shows based on a nearly destroyed family because one or both of the wage earners are obsessed with having to do more to have more, that we would be smart enough to look around some. It's all around us, everyday, yet we turn a blind eye to reality, and sign up another job to fill in the whole week. And some probably curse the need to take time off to eat and sleep.

Re: Had To Stop Working Today
It is just a shame that we believe we cannot survive, let alone be successful, without working 7 days a week. Who does that guy S. Truett Cathy (Chick-Fil-A) think he is, actually making that very concept work..... to the tune of 3 Billion $ a year.
If you have never read his story, you might take a few minutes off work to look him up. Quite a man!

Re: Had To Stop Working Today
I worked with a guy that liked to start really really early. He was saying that he signed a contract for this one job, and asked if he could start at 5. They said that was alright. Then he asked all the neighbors if it was all right. No one had any problems. He showed up at 5:00 each morning and finished the job, and just as he is getting done, one of the neighbors stops buy and asks about some work. He ends up getting that job, so he rolls out at 5:00, and gets a complaint... from the clients of the first job.

Re: Had To Stop Working Today
To quote Willie.... the brutal taskmaster God of work:
Well, That SOB ruled my life for several years. I worked my fingers to the quick roofing... ruined my back, got sun spots all over and feel like a much older man than i am for all my trouble. Having a 5 yr old boy, i find myself hoping that he will heed some of the old mans advice on being a bit easier on himself than i was. At 32 i sould still be at the height of my career and sill turning cartwheels. Instead i grunt and groan just to turn over in bed. I wonder how much better i might feel had i took a few week ends off and actually quit at 3 a few days too. Water, sweat and blood under the bridge now... We are all pressed as men to be earners. Hunt gather is not something made up... it is born into most of us. God bless you all. I think of some of the dead beats out there that wont bed over to pick up a nickle... preferring to have some one else hand it to them, and want to work them good and hard... But as men, and even now our women, have to work to make the ends meet these days. I would like my wife to stay home with our son, but she has a great job she really enjoys. Her boss's love her and couldnt run the place w/out her now. She brings home around 300 a week with tips... and brother, believe me... the slow times when work isnt movin... that 300 saves our neck. I hate it, but have to appreciate what we have been blessed with. Times have changed, women now often have to work too, used to be women could stay home. These days it's almost impossible. IF you're doing well enough that your wife can stay home... PAt yourself on the back, you're makin it how we should all be able to. I kept mine home for 3 or 4 years, she loved it. Eventually she got bored and wanted to go back to work, glad she was willing after i spoiled her!! Now she's my sugar momma some weeks. And dont think she dont use that as leverage. She'll bust my chops in a minute for procrastinatin!!! Take your days when you can. Be grateful for those days. And always remember those less fortunate than ourselves. If you'r e a believer, share your thoughts on workin Sundays. Encourage others to set aside that day, for the good of all mankind.

Re: Had To Stop Working Today
I nearly got arrested for working on a sunday whilst working in Belgian in the 70's. Their strict religious laws forbid any construction work and when the cops turned up none of us had our passports as ID isn't required in the UK, so we weren't used to it. None the cops spoke English( typical foreigners) but luckily there was a phone on site and we called the owner off the bar where we were staying. He came over and sorted it by offering the cops a free drink. After that sundays had to be spent in the bar, and er indoors wasn't too pleased when the cash dissapeared behind the bar instead of going home to her.

Re: Had To Stop Working Today
We were installing laminate flooring in a coffee shop one time, the place is open 7 days a week so we had to do it after hours.
We started around 5:30 - 6 when they closed, working away, cutting outside on the sidewalk and the cops showed up at 11 and said we had to stop. I told the cop "I only have like 10 more cuts to do then we will be finished." He said "ok" and watched me make the last 10 cuts before he left.

Re: Had To Stop Working TodayQuote:
I finally finished the roof in early November...this is in Iowa..... I was on the roof with a pneumatic nailer; wham wham wham!!! A cop comes by and asks when I am done, I figure since he is asking, I may have some latitude; I say a half hour. This was at 11:30 PM on a Sunday night. He says no; you're done now. Probably just as well, in November at night you could feel when the frost would hit and things got slippery. By the way..... this is 25 foot up on a 12-12 roof. I can't believe I survived that job. I had no idea what I was doing and was running on pure stupidity and bullheadedness. willy |
