Habitat For Humanity
Have you ever donated your services?
What do you think of this organization? Is it a good way for rookies to learn proper building practices?

Re: Habitat For Humanity
I've done some work for HFH.
Seemed like a good organization that allowed me to give back to the community. I think an inexperienced guy could learn a few things, but I'm not sure if I'd trust HFH to teach guys "the trade". |

Re: Habitat For Humanity
I won't do it. They just built one next to a customers home and they have four or five kids that the mom stays at home and home schools the kids. They don't lift a finger around the house outside, anyway kids toys dumped around, and the kids running around the hood like no one else lives there.
Property is premium here on the cape and they have a land bank tax that was supposed to buy open space. What does the town do? Donates the property to HFH.....They want a home let them get out and work like the rest of us..... JMHO. |

Re: Habitat For Humanity
I would like to think that most of the people who benefit from the HFH program are not scum. I have seen similar programs where the people have monthly payments of $300 for a $300,000 house and they have tons of money to buy a ton of toys (pool tables, wide screen TVs).

Re: Habitat For Humanity
We have particpated in quite a few HFH projects. It's nice to see that the working poor are able to receive affordable housing and participate in the building process.

Re: Habitat For Humanity
I have kind of shook my head at some of the people that the local habitat for humanity chapter has helped out. One a few years ago was a single woman probably in her late 40s to early 50s with a halfway decent job. I would rather help build churches or something else if I want to donate my time.
