Thats one heck of a house with a 30' drop in it.

I got scared about something like this happening today. We were working on a cold storage building and the fuse box was 3 phase wired direct to the pole, no shutoff. My dad kept sticking his hands in there missing the the live stuff by less then 1/4". I told him to watch it about 40 times but one slip and it would have been over. I wanted to pull the meter but he didnt want to. I said its better then getting killed but nobody got killed, just got within 1/8 of an inch of getting smoked. This was the first time I got scared.

When I was running high rise work I watched a tower crane operator kill an iron worker, he misjudged the height of his load and took the guys head almost completely off. It was the saddest thing I have ever witnessed firsthand.

Yikes

A friend said he seen a crane operator get killed when the load swung back twords the crane, the boom went straight up and the load was comming straight for the cab. The guy jumped out thinking it was going to crush the cab. When he jumped he landed in between the tracks, the load missed the cab and when it swung past and the cable got tight it turned the machine with the guy between the tracks slicing him in two.

Very sad.

This is just another case that proves that residential work skimps on safety.

well what would osha have done to prevent this??

the majority of deaths are on commecial jobs were osha is prevalent anyways. so why is that?? sure you have a few on residential but no where near that of commercial- union- osha.

by the way i just fired taped and elevator shaft in a remodel last week
and another one about 5 months ago. Oshas rules still apply to residential construction but there just isnt enough officers to go around every project to check them. Thats why i said osha isnt needed on residential because of the fact there isnt enough officers so why have them go to less dangerous jobs??

really sorry for the guy and his fam. but man, i hope you have all your ducks in a row cause when osha gets out there it is going to be hell, cause they have to go investigate that stuff.

Because accidents happen.

As far as what OSHA could have done...who knows, I saw no investigation report....but falling down a 30' shaft leads one to believe the shaft way was open ~ no toe guards and railings to prevent just such an incident. I am not saying that IS what happened here, but it is a POSSIBILITY...along with a hundred other possibilities.
