Grease Based Paint?

So, I am constantly being called by customers in my area to fix another painter's work. Just for the hell of it we'll call him "Al's Painting". So anyways, I am always coming across the shadiest things I've ever seen when fixing his work. FYI, the only reason I do the work is bc it is usually work I originally estimated, then was undercut by like 40%, and now called in to fix. So I do, then end up landing more work and twice as many references.

I was in my Ben Moore store yesterday and a woman came in furious, saying how if that store refers him they are hurting themselves, etc. etc. So the guy asked what happened and it turns out "Al" went on and on about prep and how reputable he was regarding a good size garage floor coating quote. Turns out the homeowner came home at lunch or whatever, and they hadn't even swept the floor, let alone cleaned oil spots from the vehicles and were applying a two step epoxy coating in one step/coat.

When the woman freaked out, he explained that the dirt and sand left on the floor helps to create grit and helps with adhesion, and that there was no need to worry about painting over oil spots bc it's a grease based product.

Umm...What?

It doesn't sound like this will go on much longer. Grease based.....man I thought you were talking about some new paint on the market.

I thought the same. If you're not in a big town he'll be out of business soon.

With work like that, he is probably cheap. And we all know that most people will be a sucker for a cheap price almost every time.

I do not give referrals any more for this reason. It has come to legal over referals, so I take the clients number and give it to a few contractors. They can call them if they like, and I am not involved. Some HO's and GC's find this odd, but it is what it is because of sleazebags.

I could just picture some guy being all serious while keeping a straight face and saying that.

After he destroys "Als Painting" but doing crappy work he will just dream up a new name.

I also like how dirt makes it stick, I like to throw a handful or 2 in a can before I stir it.

Exactly what I was thinking. One big lawsuit and he'll be done "at least done on the up&up. He'll be just as big a competitor as an illegal.

Next time Im in bLowes Ill ask them to thow some dirt in there before they mix it.

My dad mixed some silica sand in with some paint and put it on the floor of a 14" aluminum boat. It worked good for about 10 years but wore off now.
