Is This Going Through To Much Trouble?

Before I got the roof on an addition I'm doing we got about 3" of rain in one night. So here's the deal, insulation under sub floor (crawlspace) was kraft faced and water was stading on top of it this morning. I pulled one side of the insulation down in the entire addition to let it dry out. Then I deceided to go ahead and pull it all out and replace with new at my cost. What would everyone else have down in my situation?

Insulated after the roof was on.

Replacing the insulation might save you from a lawsuit for mold infestation down the road though.

Good thought, but my thought was insulate before the floor was down to save time and be easier. I know in didn't work out that way, it ends up costing double.

Don't you need a framing and wiring inpection before you insulate?

Where I live there are no such thing as an inspection. You are not required to pull a permit unless it is new construction. Even then the code enforcer will not show up. We have one code enforcer who is usally busy trying to get the white trash to mow their yards or clean up the tires in it. I wish we had inspections and code it would be alot easier to compete against the jacklegs and cobblers in town.

When fiberglass insulation gets wet, after construction is done and the heat gets turned on, insulation smells like cat pee. One of the mean tricks people do if they get burned. We had insulated heat ducts in Seattle and people would do that all the time, pour water down into the heat ducts.

Lovely smell.

Any chance you put a fan under there to circulate the air and make sure the moisture was out before re-insulating?

I agree with you, replace the insulation and avoid all future problems, and I agree with Chris, make SURE it is dried out sufficiently BEFORE you insulate again.

And I agree with Killer, I don't insulate at all until the building is weathertite.

I had a friend that I was helping build a cabin up north . We built the foundation and subfloor last fall. To save time and work, he wanted to install the insulation in the floor before the subfloor went in. I begged him not to as the walls and roof were not going to be installed until the spring. He insisted that he could keep it dry through the northern Michigan winter, so against my advice and gut feeling, I let him. Needless to say, the weather and wind ripped the tarps and plastic he has installed, and all the isulation was saturated. He and his wife spend a weekend hauling garbagebags of wet insulation out of the crawlspace.

Oh and at least around here, the insulation companies install for about the same price as you would get for just the material. It's something no one does except the insulation companies. Let 'em have it. It costs me nothing extra.

The closest insulation company to me is about 120 miles.
