Getting Started Doing Gulf Coast Work....

Hello to all.
I am a licensed Michigan builder that would like to go south for the winter from November to May. I have been working for a general contractor for the past 3.5 years building decks, porches and garages but the work here is about to run out. Can anyone point me in direction to get started heading south? Would be nice to know who to contact first, what I can expect in terms of per sq ft pay and cheapest way to find accomadations.
I work alone so I'm not looking for work that requires a large crew but have many years experience production building items stated above. Have my own truck trailer and tools and would very much like to feed myself this winter. LOL
Thanks in advance to everyone that replies. thedeckguy@techemail.com

Welcome, Have you thought about working for someone? That might be easier than trying to land jobs in an area you don't know?

If I were relocating for the winter, or longer, I would look on the map and identify a few communities away from the New Orleans area, and contact the chamber of commerce for each one and phone or write an inquiry...same way you said it here. I imagine, as short as qualified craftsmen and contractors as they are, they would give you all the info and references you could ask for...just show up. You could look further inland, like Baton Rouge, and maybe place an add, saying contractor relocating for several months, looking to book work, if interested, call. Something simple may lead to some fantastic work. I would avoid doing any FEMA sponsored work since the paperwork will kill you. Good luck.

So, basically you are a carpenter who's about to be laid-off by your boss.

Go to Florida they still have ample work out there.
