GC On This Old House Bashing Framer

Did anyone watch this old house and see the new GC talking about how crappy the framers did. Said they framed the floor up 1.5" to high and had to rip out the stairs and rebuild them.

That's got to be embarrassing to have someone bash you like that on TV. But they shouldn't have done the bad work in the first place.

I quit watching This Old House a couple of years ago. They used to show them actually building stuff, but last time I watched, they were too busy going to some factory showing how something was made, or showing how to select the perfect wall paper, or some other waste of time nonsense. They may show a couple of minutes of them replacing a stud or something, but it's all made ready in advance and whatever they're doing goes right in with no complications. Plus it's over in less then a minute. So basically it's turned into a show for women in my opinion. I still watch New Yankee Workshop with Norm sometimes, but even he is outdated. He did like 5 shows in a row on building and installing cabinets and parts of it were silly. He created way more work for himself then necessary and he was all jazzed about using these "new" products that have been around for at least 5 years.

I agree this old house sucks now. I do like them showing how things are made but I think they are getting into way to much DIY crap like picking paint colors and furnature colors.

I would laugh at those shows that would have these huge workshops and they would build, like, a router table. WTF? You have a bonzai workshop and you use it to build more tools? WTF?

bashing people doesn't change a thing. If the quality affected the job or my client then I would pull them to the side aor after work and explain what i have a problem with. Too many loudmouth know it all GC's.

Yup I feel the same way! I have ran into some loud mouth know it alls in the past, I can't stand them! I never bash others work or other trades. When I see something thats not quite how I would do it. I just think well maybe they had a special circumstance or thats how they had to do it or something. Even when HO's show me there handy work I say " Oh ya that looks very nice"

They ring the doorbell and the HO's answer the door and poorly act like they are surprised to see Tom Silva show up that day. They give Tommy a quick tour of their house, Tommy says "I love the old chestnut in these houses", the HO apologizes for the mess their kids made, then Tommy looks at the problem like he's never seen it before. "You know Sarah, I just happen to have my arsenal of tools with me and I think the HOME CENTER (he always says "Home Center") has the material we'll need."

Sure they do, Tom. The producers are on top of it.

Can homeowners get any dopier? While I'll admit the show is quasi-interesting, the time lapse videography does us all a disservice. I saw Tom Silva install an attic staircase in an area without a header in about 4 minutes. No dust or anything. Man...he must be good, or I must be bad.

Thats too bad. This Old House used to be one of my favorite shows when I was a kid, but I haven't seen it in years. So its another DIY show now? Isn't there enough of that on HGTV? Like 24 hrs/day of that stuff?
S'pose that's the only way HD and Lowes can bring in the money.

I remember every tuesday night watching this old house when I was little. It was my favorite show. I would get upset when it was over. Now it is more of a DIY show.

I would say the GC did a lousy job because it his job to oversee the subs work. It is his name that goes on the project.

What happened was the framer was a sub and the GC ran off so they had to hire a new GC. The new guy was bashing the old guys job.

the episodes being shown in oklahoma right now are of them redoing a new orleans home.which is fantastic,but i am sick of seeing the musican's village that habitiat for humanity is building.seems like a 30 min show spends about 10 mins on rebuilding the home and 20 mins on the village.they need to do one or the other.
the ask this old house,segments are just plain stupid.and when they pull out some gadget and each one of them guesses what it is has got to be the biggest waste of film,next to high school reunion on tvland.

I agree, I hate how they show most of the episode on the habitat homes and talking about it. Just show working on your damn house for god sake. They might show 5min of the house they are working on.

I love the phony, surprised "look who's at my door" look as well. Especially when it's captured by a camera THAT'S ALREADY INSIDE to tape the HO's reaction.
