I've had this idea for a while but no HO to try it out on yet, set skillsaw depth to 1/8th (thin kerf blade) and randomly cut crisscrossing pattern over entire cabinets, fill in cuts with black filler, sand and finish. It would give a neat fractured appearance

Make them operate and look like barn doors, right down to the x's . . .

Rough sawn wood would look great, - - or for another method you could even use MDF and just 'router-design' a stile and rail and x-rails (and even a plank effect) right into it.

plywood doors faced w/ weathered barn(or fence) boards.

I made a door to a closet look like an outhouse door once...crescent moon and all!

Re: Fresh Ideas For Cabinets?

Distressed Knotty Alder looks about as rustic as rustic can be.
Keep the finish to a matt or dead flat sheen, that helps age it too.
Keep the door style to a basic old school raised panel and go flush and inset a face frame. As this is where cabinetry started in this country so that helps give it the throw back look.

Sorry no great pics to back it up.

I wouldn't sacrifice all the latest in hardware and convenience to to it though. All new work should perform as well as possible. IMHO

I love this kind of stuff. The secret is in the distressing and finish to get it where I think you want it to go.

Sounds like a fun project

This site might not have exactly what you're looking for, but check this site out for inspiration.

You could also use chicken wire instead of glass for door inserts.

Good luck.

Quarter sawn white oak, my favorite, followed by rustic alder.
Never got into the barnwood thing, but I nailed plenty of it up when I lived in Vermont.
