Forum With The Most?

What forum gets the most closed down threads? I thing the plumbing forum does, is there others that out do it?

Re: Forum With The Most?

It's without a doubt the plumbing forum. There's a mod on here that arbitrarily closes any thread that he feels isn't going anywhere or is in the least bit contraversial. Undoubtly he feels like he's keeping everyone on a more civil plane.

I think maybe you guys watch
that one more than the others.
They tend to get shut down
faster on the other forums (fora)
I think.
I'll push the red button and call
B/S in other places, but don't think
it's my place to do it in yours.

Re: Forum With The Most?

Speaking for the moderators, we don't close threads typically until they get out of hand, or really are contributing nothing to the purpose of the forum. Anytime a member feels we are in error, a message may be sent to Nathan or the mod, and we will respond, and in some cases, re-open a thread if their is a valid reason to do so.

Also, it is usually after it has been reported several times before we even see it.

Re: Forum With The Most?

It's gotten to the point where plumbers are pressured to not mention taboo expressions like "hire a pro", "call a plumber" or "what does your plumber think?".

Non-plumbers may find this offensive, or attempt to manipulate an interpretation of TOS by gathering other non-plumbers to flag the thread...effectively the forum policy slips toward aiding the DIY as opposed to professional discussion.

There are certain non-plumbing members who seem to enter the plumbing forum for the specific intent of arousing trouble, then step back and claim a violation of TOS when the reaction isn't desirable.

I DO NOT envy the mods predicament in this case, not one bit, but I have to mention that simply closing a thread whenever anyone is in disagreement is a sure way to stunt growth & learning.

When it becomes blatently personal, insultive or threats fly, sure, kill it.

When it's a debate on semantics, ethics or business practice...sometimes the truth isn't pleasant, but needs to be heard.

We actually do have valid points at times.

I told a regular member to consult his own plumber because a fixture he wanted to install is illegal in my state and I have no idea if it is in his state, then I'm jumped on by a non-plumber for it, the thread went south from there.

Are we innocent?
Hell no, there has always been a sort of comradery here with more established members when they react to newer members posting with silly questions, much like the real world when your the new guy at the shop or on the job site.

Whether it's right or wrong isn't my call, but we have followed the example.

Re: Forum With The Most?

What you folks see in the forums is the result of the community overall. If you see something you don't like, change it.

Now, what you don't see are the actions of the moderators sending PMs to people that violate our TOS or posting rules. Those are personal issues and are handled on a one to one basis, not in the middle of a thread.

Anyone can report a post and let me assure them, it will be read and dealt with accordingly. There is nothing arbitrary to what we do. We follow guidelines and we discuss those guidelines regularly.

Our charge is to enforce the rules and to keep things rolling. If they are rolling down hill and the best interest of the site isn't served, the thread gets closed. It really is as simple as that.

Re: Forum With The Most?

BTW... This thread is a perfect example of not serving the community overall.

I keep reading and re-reading the posts and I'm trying to see what this post has to do with a general discussion of the construction industry.

Somehow this post went from a simple question that really should be addressed to Nathan directly, because no one but he has the data to base an answer on, to a reiteration of the problems that 5 or 6 people are having with each other.

We have over 20K members on this site. Why should the issues of half a dozen folks dominate the list of topics every day in one form or another?

Is there an agenda here that someone would like to share or is this subject really just that interesting?

Re: Forum With The Most?

The threads that seem to get closed the most are the plumbing threads, and any threads that have plumbers in them . i fear this thread is shortlived as well. (just kidding guys)

Re: Forum With The Most?

I'm still waitin' for ya'll to grow the f*&k up. This ain't high school, it ain't junior high, why a bunch of grown men are getting so wound up at what someone else said about them is completely beyond me.

I've worked on jobsites w/ multiple trades - more in the past two years than at any other time because my focus was new construction. What I found there was this: each trade would come in, nod at you when you passed them, moved their trucks when you asked them, do their job and go home. The only problems (and even those were minor) I ran into was dealing with the siders who didn't speak English and who's boss was never around.

Here, especially lately (in the past year), you've got guys starting threads about how their trade is better than all the others, you've got gown men getting into "he said, she said" arguments that go on and on and on...., you've got a marked lack of basic respect for each other...basically, ya'll are starting to sound like a bunch of whiny-ass bitches, not professional tradesmen.

ct.com is a kick-ass site, it's got a helluva lotta good information buried in it's threads, but someone wanders in now....what is their first impression gonna be? Drama queen central...

C'mon guys, let's bring it back up a notch or two. This petty personal bullsh*t is getting really old.

Tell you what, someone posts a bonehead plumbing question and the only proper response is "call a plumber?" Well, tell 'em to call a plumber and be done with it. That's your opinion. No one gets to tell you what your opinion is.

I've made a point of not talking price here. Others have no problem opening up and talking about how much something costs them. I don't jump their sh*t, I usually lose interest in the thread because it's moving in a direction I'm not interested in.

Re: Forum With The Most?

To add to what BuiltByMAC said, I second that...as a working GC, jobsite management is all about cooperation....and this forum should be the same. Some of you think it is an honor to be a moderator...well, the "honor" wears off about the second one of these we get to referee. And just like a job site, I shut down counterproductive activity. If you don't like someone asking how to or how much, ignore it or report it. How many of you guys would listen to an argument on a job site?

On a job site, at a bar or an aquaintance. The same rule applies:
