Formica Countertop Overhangs.

Ever notice the underside of the overhang of the formed countertops in front of the sink or over the diswasher? Usually trashed after a couple of years from moisture hitting the particle board. I've been sealing those areas for the last 10 years with some kiltz and it seems to help. I also seal the particle board where the sink cut out is if I can get there before the plumbers. I know it's not supposed to leak around the sinks but sometimes it does. I think the factories should start sealing the underside of the overhang but was trying to think of something better to seal the cut outs. Any ideas??

The correct way to do this is to use an equalizer backer so the countertop has equal stresses on both sides of it. This is usually another piece of high pressure laminate material, only a very cheap version of it. This would take care of all the problelms. Or, you could coat it with an exterior grade polyurethane, this would be better than the Kilz.

I do the same thing, Rob, - - I coat both those areas for added protection. Admittedly, I usually use whatever is clear-colored and handy. Contac Cement, polyurethane, sanding sealer, whatever, - - it all helps.

I also avoid tucking the dishwasher too far back.

Any brushable, 2 part epoxy should cure this problem forever. Use 2 coats to ensure coverage.

I don't see too much of what you are talking about near the dishwasher or in front of the sink, but I do see the damage from time to time in the sink cutout. I think it's a good idea to protect any exposed particle board edge, I usually try to smear silicone on this exposed edge in the sink cut out from the caulk gun I am using.
