Form W-9

Im getting ready to paint a building for Caphop used cars. Told them I had to have a contract signed and needed a deposit. They called today said they had the deposit and a W-9 form for me to sign. Is this a normal thing when doing commercial work?
This is the first commercial building Ive done, so it kind of through me when they said a W-9. any help would be great.

So they want your TIN. Big deal. It's not like it's a secret. Use your social if you don't have a TIN. Apparently they feel they are required to file information returns. I've had to fill that form out 3 or 4 times, with no particular pattern to it. Just MAKE SURE you claim that income, because they are intending to let the IRS know you made it.

They need that so they can send you a 1099, unless you are incorporated you wouldn't get a 1099.
