Footing Depths

Last that I'm aware of our footing depth was changed to 42" from 36". I've been told the farther south you go footing depths are shallower.

What are your respective minimum footing depths on undisturbed soil?

The United States Army Corps of Engineers, Publication Number EM 1110-1-1905, "Engineering and Design - Bearing Capacity of Soils".

http://www.usace.army.mil/publicatio...905/entire.pdf

Page 20 of this document is most helpful, as it has the frost depth contour map of The United States. This is a document most often referred to by AHJ's when they set the footing depth for your town.

Were at 30" here but residential caissons can go 40 ft to bedrock if there is certain clays. Water line at 5' but no minimum on sewer. I think the sewer shoud be 3'.

Sewer depth is dependent on the system, septic systems will be about 6" deep, so that they enter the tank above the discharge, for regulaer sewer's it is dependent on the depth of the municipal main, I have seen mains as shallow as 2.5 feet.

Re: Footing Depths

Actually here with all foundations being poured concrete walls, Spread footings are rarely required for a couple of different reasons. Frost protection at 30" is required.

48". I believe it's the same requirement in all of Ontario whether you live in Toronto or North Bay, which is odd to me. I wonder if Toronto has had frost below 2 feet for quite some time. But dig we must, (I'm speking of decks).

In my opinion, in my area, if you can't get 3 ft. dept to the city sewer the permit should not be issued. Shallow pipes get blocked and then freeze and then @#$%... I've always been able to have deep pipes to a septic tank too.

Re: Footing Depths

Around here, we have to do a minimum of 40" walls. So, with a footer, we are 48" deep.

That falls to local code, and in the area of septics, the EPA is involved also, there are parts of Wisc. that do not allow septics at all, and you must have a water tight storage tank that you have pumped once a month if there is no city sewer, by EPA mandate.

48". Some years where it's cold with no snowpack is what they are trying to use as worst case scenario. We've dug in hot weather in June and come up with frost.

Re: Footing Depths

24" here as minimum.

Most of our architects require us to go to 30".

When we do work in DC. it is 30".

Re: Footing Depths

I did a set of plans for this addition on my parents house in IL. They want/need me to go 50" on it(inspectors). Well It really doesn't matter to me tho, the tractor is going to be digging it anyways. I don't care!
