Fish Tanks

Has anybody put in a fish tank into the design of a home lately? I haven't seen lately and wondering whether the are phasing out of the building market.Becoming less popular. You usually see them in Entry, Living areas.

Re: Fish Tanks

Not everyone likes fish and not everyone wants to be saddled with the maintenance of having a large built in tank. If you do not like it, what do you do with it?

Re: Fish Tanks

The company i worked for, before going on my own. Very high end....they do stuff for a few builders, and the owner of the company also builds spec homes in the 5 to 10 million dollar range. Have put aquariums in everything he builds (of course!!)

Re: Fish Tanks

To my eye, built in aquariums are a 1970's design element.

Re: Fish Tanks

I just installed 2 in a new house. 1 in the family room and 1 in
their 2nd floor hallway in the wall. Both were installed in the wall.

They turned out very nice. He said he hoped the next homeowner
likes fish because if he moves he's not taking them out.

Re: Fish Tanks

You should install a fish tank for the septic line that runs from the toilet.

MDSHUNK, Do you think that this 70's idea can come back fresh with a new image idea?

I'm not qualifed to answer that. A designer, I am not. I just install stuff. A built in fish tank, to me, will always scream 1970's.

I can get my hands on the amoeba shaped shagg carpet to match that astronaut helmet shaped tank.
Actually had a piece of oak on a hood which we had thought we had properly treated [detonate] no joke.
Salt water is nasty

Re: Fish Tanks

almost 10 years ago, I did the king of acquariums job. Game room had a wall with 9 @ 125 gallon acquariums. Three over three over three, all wrapped in oak with oak flip up fronts to feed and to hide the lamps, and oak cabinets in between (tank, cab, tank cab, tank, stacked 3 high.

Separate room had 2 @ 250 gal, 3 @ 125 gal, 9 @ 70 gal, 3 @ 50 gal. Many were salt, so we put in an industrial reverse osmose system to remove everything from the water before putting the salt back in. Turbine compressor for air, all piped in the walls, vacume lines in the walls, water fill lines in the walls, primo stuff.

They had a full time marine biologist to maintain the stuff. They bought 2000 goldfish weekly as feeders along with frozen shrimp and lobster.

Then, when it was all running smooth, they went to prision for medicaid fraud.

Re: Fish Tanks

i know this is a really old thread, we install up to 1000G of fish tank in houses, the biggest problem is weight, some people want a 300+ gallon on the 2nd floor, yea sure the tank and fish is expensive, when they hear the engineering for the install they blow a lode rite there in the floor, one house i been to has a 6x6x6' (glass) tank on 2nd floor wow talk about pushing weight

Re: Fish Tanks

Recently did a man cave for a repeat customer his fish tank is 8'L x 4'H x 4'D. It's shomwhere in the 900 gallon range. He added a little touch with it. Instead of the standard rocks he used .50 cal chrome plated shells.

Re: Fish Tanks

I'm gonna guess that 900g was in the basement seeing that it's in the 9000 lbs range (saltwater) regular foundation 4200 psi concrete don't work, 1 of our tank same size 4 years later twisted and started leaking as it dipped into the floor by 1 1/2" est, while i empty to fix, i decided to buff out the acrylic
