Re: To Fire Or Not To Fire, That Is The Question

You said they and them. Was there more than one guy who did this?
Will he have to wait another 90 days to see that raise? At $1 an hour, 40 hrs/week times 13 weeks, that stupid episode would have cost him $520!!
Hit him right where it hurts. Not sure I would have penalized him that severely, but I don't know the whole situation. As long as he is accepting of the penalty and isn't bitter (likely to quit?) then I guess it should work out fine.

1$ raise sounds like an insult.

Have any of you guys lowered a guy's pay? I've never done it, but I saw a GC get mad at an employee and lowered his pay $3 per hour. I would think this would ruin an employee's attitude for good...

Here in the lower Midwest (read: not NYC) any raise at this point in our pitiful economy is reason for celebration. Not to mention that this is a new guy who is also young. Probably talkin about a 10% raise at a dollar.

Never works out well. Everybody thinks they are a superstar and underpaid already.

You might as well just fire the guy before you do that. Would any of you guys, at any time have responded any differently to a pay cut?? I never really had a bad confrontation with any boss. I probably would not have handled it well.

I have taken a pay cut in an attempt to keep the boss in business. It didn't work out well for either of us.

I too am a bit confused over "he" and "they".

We have lowered a mans pay when his walk did not match his talk(by a lot). They soon took a walk of their own.

My experience in some other businesses that I have operated in my career is that employees that don't feel that they are being paid enough, will sometimes steal the percieved difference from you.

Re: To Fire Or Not To Fire, That Is The Question

We all got pay cut in February Big cut. 15%. No bonuses after well-done prematurely work. Fell out of sours. But is better than nothing. Personally I work more better and faster, I'm angry and mad and want to finish each job faster and go ahead no turning back.

Wondering about they and them? Thought it was one employee.

I wondered that too.

When Cooke gets back to this thread, I'm sure he'll clarify.

Re: To Fire Or Not To Fire, That Is The Question

Just to clarify - only one employee.

Must be a regional thing - I seem to use "they" for one and/or more person(s).

Sorry about the confusion.

But to answer some of the other posts - the pay raise is suspened "indefinitely", he did not quit, showed up everyday since and seems to have a better attitude (more positive, go-getter) but we shall see how long that lasts.

As far as the pay increase being suspended, it was to serve two purposes: 1) to penalize him and 2) to test his dedication and desire to stay and grow with the company.

No, I was a little lacking in my explanation. While I do believe anyone can change the tenor of their life responses, I also feel you are probably right that a person does not often totally change their basic nature.

I have been in this business of helping societal misfits correct their thinking and modify their behavior for decades. And I have been an adult for much longer. I should know better.

Yet I, myself, still find that almost every month, or so, I experience a degree of wrestling with some of my own old demons. My behavior today is different than it was in my younger days. My outward reactions are different. And although they have lessened and are tempered by maturity, a few of my ingrained temptations, and the triggers for them, still exist in my subconscious. At times they still try to rear their ugly heads. I still have to resist them.

The internal "fight" is no longer really a true fight - more like - aggravating resistance. And it lasts a lot less long than in years gone by. But my point is that while I no longer lash out like a tiger, some of the old stripes still try to show through at times.

So though people can and do change, they have to want to. And they have to continue to work at it. Admittedly, some people don't.
