Finding Out One Of Your Coworkers Is A Complete Hack

So I work for a remodeling company, and there are multiple installers who do their own jobs pretty much solo. There's a guy at my work, we'll call him Andre. Andre is always talking your ear off when you run into him at the shop. He'll tell you how his homeowners are unreasonable, and how they are always expecting too much from him. As far as he's concerned, he does top quality work and homeowners are just not realistic.

So anyways, he got ran off a job the other day, leaving me to come in and finish a few things he didn't get around too. He thought he was done too until the HO called our manager and said they needed some stuff finished up.

I got there, and I saw the most amateurish tile job, short of the one in my buddy's basement done by the previous HO, that I've ever seen. Especially since we are NOT a cheap company, I couldn't believe that the HO didn't complain about it. I kept my mouth shut and finished up everything, but I really wanted to tell the HO that they deserved better and should get all this redone.

This job is a small bathroom, with plaster lathe walls and an old mudbed floors, the kind where they just laid in some old scrap lumber and poured sand mix over the whole thing. It took him upwards of 4 weeks to complete, and the manner in which he completed it astounds me. For your viewing displeasure, I give you some highlights of his work.

Wow. Does he still have a job? How can it get that far? Must be good company to work for...... No oversight at all.

Very little, you're correct, which is great for me. The difference between me and 'Andre' is that I take pride in what I do, and he just thinks just being proud is enough. I'm seriously considering telling management about this, the problem is that he and them go way back to another company, so it might be unwise. Still, they need to hear this from someone other than a pissed of homeowner.

This HO will be fine until they have a friend over that knows something about construction, and then they'll be on the phone, livid.

If Andre goes way back with the company then again, WOW! I would think this could be an opportunity for the company to do the right thing. Fire Andre, give you a whistle blower bonus, and gut that bathroom.

The managers are given too many projects to manage. I've been here now for about 5 months and I have yet to see one on a job site.

Re: Finding Out One Of Your Coworkers Is A Complete Hack

I've seen plenty of work like that but it is usually a diy homeowner, or some type of part time handyman responsible for it.

If Andre thinks that this is acceptable, he is dead wrong. If he is proud of this work, then he is VERY delusional.

Are the customers blind? No complaints? Just WOW!

That's what I was thinking. Like, why aren't they at our office setting fire to the furniture and keying cars in the parking lot right now?

I normally don't comment on others work, but wow that's some stuff right there. That bit on the edge of the tub with the corner just filled with grout is unreal. How does he sleep at night?

It's sad to see that sort of thing, someone paid their hard earned money for that?

That is some rough workmanship to say the least.

That's usually what happens when a company hires friends or family. They hire them because they are pals, not because of their skills. It looks like he is just inexperienced or has never worked alongside a journeyman carpenter. That's poor management by the company, someone should have been checking his tile work. Some better planning should have been done with the baseboard too, I would have added a filler next to that cabinet and matched up the stain. But something like that is the responsibility of who ever is managing the project, not so much the carpenter.

Are you going to keep working for that company? Do they give pay raises? They probably can't afford it if they do work like that.
