Festool Kapex

For any of you interested in the kapex I did a short little dust control test on jlc...

I think the thing sucked all the shop spiders up too...bonus!

Re: Festool Kapex

Gene, I'm sure it would help a lot. Also, I really like the fein vacs too, very quiet. I've got 2 of the midsize (turbo II) for the router tables and the large one (turboIII) hooked up to my pm66 saw.

You really want some dust colletion above the blade on the saw as well. I don't (just have to vac hooked to the base of the cabinet saw dust port). Lots of dust still gets in the air otherwise.

http://www.feinus.com/p/newdustfree/vacmain.htm

I've spent too much on vacs (have the festool ct33 as well), and I'm sure if I would have planned it all out, a whole-shop dust collection system would work better/easier. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

Jay

Sorry about jlc link, didn't know you had register. Good site though, lots of info, business, carpentry, bs, etc.

I'll see about posting the kapex stuff directly here...I was just being lazy.

For those not registered on the other site, a copy:

I figured I would post the results of my very un-scientific little test with the kapex today.

I made a few test cuts with some 1x10 mdf (yuck) with the ct33 vac attached on top of nice clean, white table.

Re: Festool Kapex

Most of my interest in this saw is for the dust collection capabilities. I think it does a great job, but I think I would still want to put a fastcap hood over it as well if I was inside a finished space.

Of course mdf is the worst when it comes to dust (unless you're cutting hardiplank or something similar ;-), so with "normal" wood I think it would work even better.

J

Alright, that was pretty much the copy over at jlc...Jay

Re: Festool Kapex

Not to change the subject, but since you mentioned fastcap, my fastcap saw hood is absolutely horrible. The plastic blocks where all the rods come together started cracking within a week of getting it. It also doesn't come to a nice "V" at the bottom like they show in the advertisements. I'm very disappointed w/ mine.

Re: Festool Kapex

I hate to hear that. I've got mine installed on a hitachi slider in the shop...and it's not used much (the saw or the shop).

Saying that, it has worked well over the last year or so, with no moving parts (after the install).

How are you using it?

Re: Festool Kapex

I'm using it on jobsites on a DeWalt slider set up on a stand. The hood was obviously not manufactured right, the side supports are pulled in toward the center which is stressing the plastic block where all the supports meet. Also some of the velcroe tabs can't be used because they're nowhere near the support rods. I first noticed the cracked blocks on the third use, and it's not a case of me beating the crap out of it or anything.

Re: Festool Kapex

The hood in the shop sits on a table (which the saw is on) so I don't have any problem with it. That's too bad that it's not working for you on site, that's supposedly what it's for.

Yeah, the only dust your sawhood collects is on the outside.......lol
