Re: Extension Ladder Whistle

Are you straps perfect without a twist in them? If so that is your problem they vibrate in the high wind. Put a few twists in your straps.

Re: Extension Ladder Whistle

My guess is the wind going past the open ends of the treads. Try blocking them off with some pipe insulation or GreatStuff foam.

I had a job at the shore which was a 50 mile/75 minute drive. I had the same problem, drove me nuts. I always thought it was the leading edge of the saw cutting into the wind and tried many times to defeat it and failed. But as I was drinking a bottle of soda I blew into it to make the whistling sound when you do it just right, and then it hit me.

I took some duct tape and covered all of the holes on the ladder rungs, both sides, and the noise went away. Ahhhhh, now if I could only get my radio to play music instead of the jabbering they all seem to do these days LOL.

Re: Extension Ladder Whistle

The ladder noise adjustment knob is generally located in the center of the dash, labled "volume". Crank it up!

TScar-

I fully agree with you regarding the remediation of the laddernoiseitation. Excellent call.

Now that the subject has been brought up, does anybody out there know how to eliminate the oh-so-annoying whizzing sound of the drag on my fishing reels when I am hooked up with a monster Striped Bass? Thanks in advance.

Re: Extension Ladder Whistle

I can't help eliminate that, but I can help you with how to instigate it: Fix a sammitch and grab a beer; you will hear the screech in seconds.

Re: Extension Ladder Whistle

Had the same problem but turned it into something good.. Just drill some holes in the stringer of your ladder. Next time you're on the highway stick your hand out the window and place your fingers over the drilled holes. You'd be amazed at what songs you can play. But start slow (maybe "Smoke on the Water"). The more trips you make the better you will get. My last trip I was able to do a medly of Rush songs (YYZ, Free Will, Spirit of Radio, etc...). Give it a shot !!

Very easy to solve:

1: Leave the rod & reel lay on the deck
2: Leave the boat on the trailer
3: Leave the trailer hooked to the truck
4: Leave the truck in the bar parking lot - No more reel noise!

I had the same problem when I first got my ladder rack. Try two things first thing I did was turn my ladder around. That cut the noise by about half. If that doesn't work flip it over. It wont eliminate the noise but now I dont even notice it. Murph

Re: Extension Ladder Whistle

I keep wanting to partially fill the rungs with great stuff, to tune it so it plays a music at 65 mph.
I do laugh my ass off though when I have a few of my ladders on the racks and there howling like a abused siren.

I did the same thing, cut the noise to almost nothing.
