There are days when I'd love to go be a greeter at Lowes...

Re: Ever Have To Go Back To Real World?
12 years ago I was offered a job running the warranty repairs for a large builder in Canada, appointments were made, I would show up and caulk tubs, touch up paint, adjust doors, whatever. Nine days later I walked in and gave notice...they thought the competition offered me more money, I replied "I thought I had problems working for myself...then I came here and discovered I didn't have problems with my company"

Re: Ever Have To Go Back To Real World?
Sure
I've done it before Even for months at a time It's not so bad I've enjoyed it It's nice not to have to worry about anything but showing up, getting your assignment, and when a customer wigs out, just "call the office ma'am" Having owned/run businesses, it gives you a different perspective on things The (smaller) paycheck's tough, when you work so hard for someone else But when you figure all the little stuff the company pays for...it's not so bad It also gives you a new/different perspective on your own business

It's still like that.. site supers last an average of 8 months. Service staff usually less. There is always at least one ad in the paper every week from a builder looking for service staff, and every few months one looking for site supers and production staff. |

there's a lot to be said for a steady paycheck and the luxury to say "call the office ma'am" that's what I should say next time ... "um, call the office ma'am" ![]()

I fear ever having to work for some one else doing residential construction. Working for other people doing commercial construction isn't so bad.

Re: Ever Have To Go Back To Real World?
I couldn't work for someone else, not again.
I spent too many years making other people rich. When I don't have work I go around with flyers until my legs give out. I make phone calls and send letters all day long. I email people looking for work. I'm petrified at the thought of having to work for someone else again. |

Re: Ever Have To Go Back To Real World?
That's funny, a few of my friends and I think that WE are in the real world, and that Inspectors, suppliers, and company men live in an alternate reality where you always get paid no matter what you are doing or how long it takes.
The weather never delays your schedule, and "You must be wealthy....You own our own businesses." "That change order should not be that much." "Can't you just throw that in?" "Your bid is too high" And my favorite, "Why do you need a hydraulic hammer, that rock is not so bad, you should be able to pick that out by hand?" He actually said that, and I asked him to show me how he would do it by hand...he didn't last long!! I live in the "real world" already...it would be nice if more people did. Re: Ever Have To Go Back To Real World?
A Contractor buddy of mine just folded. It's depressing... the guy is a very good craftsman. I don't understand why really, his overhead was pretty low. His work was excellent. There are probably reasons that I don't know.
But for me... Screw that it's balls to the walls till I'm dead or crippled. Having a boss is like being told to wear diapers. |
