Ever Bought Your Own Stolen Tools At A Pawn Shop

Have any of you ever walked into a pawn shop looking for tools.......and saw some of your own tools that had been stolen?

No,

but I had some 18v Milwaukee tools sprout legs once, and I kept my eye on cashconverters (our local pawn shop)... Iwas sure they would appear there.

A Bosch jigg saw was lifted from a site in 99. I found it at a pawn shop 50 miles away in 2003.

I bought it back.

Re: Ever Bought Your Own Stolen Tools At A Pawn Shop

We had an onsite shop cleaned out in the late 60's, it was over a weekend. Early in the week I was walking to a local hardware store and I guy asked me if I'd be interested in buying some tools. He had a small box truck full of OUR tools. I told him that I was REALLY interested but had to go get some cash, don't go away.

I went back to the site, told Dad, he called the cops, the guy did go away (to 3 hots and a cot) and we had a 100% recovery.

Re: Ever Bought Your Own Stolen Tools At A Pawn Shop

Now the law in florida says that if you can prove it's yours you don't have to buy it back anymore. Last summer I had a Connex storage container broken into. They stole 3 hilti powder guns, a hammer drill, and 4 screw guns + etc items. We found them at 2 local pawn shops the proprietor was not happy, but that's alright I'm sure the "snake in the grass" will make his money back off of some other schlubs stolen tools he bought...

Re: Ever Bought Your Own Stolen Tools At A Pawn Shop

I have had tools ripped off. I am tired of cruising pawn shops looking for tools. Tools that I have inherited from my father. This has caused me to start a website called "stolentools.com"
Here you will be able to register tools as you purchased them. Pawn shops, sfter becoming a member, can check serial numbers of items coming into their store and see if it;s listed as stolen. The rest is easy.
I'm looking for any input on this. Do you think it's a good idea? Do you thinks it will make pawning stolen tools harder and possibly apprehend the crooks trying to commit this crime.
Please respond.

Sounds like a good idea, but don't start but don't turn into a spammer promoting it.

I had a 28 ft ladder stolen awhile back and found it in a garage sale......I learned long ago to engrave anthing worth more then $10 and to keep serial #s when applicable..

I started painting my tools as well, it makes them real visable and hard to sell if stolen. I have viynl decals ( co name and number) and use ppg and clear over them so if stolen someones going to spend alot of time scraping and sanding all that off and its going to look fishy to anyone honest.

Re: Ever Bought Your Own Stolen Tools At A Pawn Shop

My dad was driveing a taxi nights when I was about 2. A guy got in the cab and asked if he wanted to buy a rifle (that was stolen from my dads truck the night before) Dad bartered with him all the way to the police station then drove up on the sidewalk honked the horn (while he had the rifle which he had checked and it was still loaded) and the thief took off & got away. I still have that gun.

Personaly I try to engrave all my tools and I engrave the most pilferalbe "stolen from Jim Pinson" I have had some of those stolen but at least I feel better knowing the thief is iether labled or has to grind all the engraving out.

Re: Ever Bought Your Own Stolen Tools At A Pawn Shop

In the 80s I had an employee steal alot of tools. His son worked for me as well, and one night called me to tell me his dad had pawned them. Son brought me the pawn tickets.

Even though I had all tools engraved and painted with company name and pressed charges against the thief I still had to buy back my tools for the price of the pawn.

Having your tools stolen sucks . Mine never showed up . You get a little more protective after that .

I totally agree with that Jon. My buddy had his tools stolen and a week later found them on craigslist. I wont say what happened but my buddy got all his tools back.

Re: Ever Bought Your Own Stolen Tools At A Pawn Shop

I am in the process of engraving all of my too "Property of Steve Eisert. DO NOT PAWN!". I have been borrowing my neighbors engraver to do this, but he needed it back and I'm only halfway done. I think I'll go steal his engraver tonight and finish up. Just kidding. I really am engraving them all though. My shop got robbed 3 times last summer and now is tighter than Fort Knox, but every bit of extra protection, right?

I was doing a job in NYC a few months ago. One of the guys I was working with had a bike he locked up outside of the building. It was stolen within the hour. He found it about 6 hours later on Craigslist.

Never had much of any tools stolen (knock on wood), but I did find a handgun that was taken from my house at a gun show.

I promptly went to the entrance and asked a sheriff's deputy to follow me to my truck, where I pulled out the theft report from two years earlier. I explained I had found a stolen gun and asked him to accompany me to the dealers booth.

I walked out with my gun back and the dealer was immediately shut down and banned from future guns shows. Not sure if he was ever charged or prosecuted.

Is it a serious offense to buy a gun with no paper work. Have no idea about this kind of stuff.

In NJ, we do not have pawn shops.

Not having them reduces petty theft significantly. Generally, I would say NJ has too many damn laws, but this one actually seems to work.
