Engineered Lumber Adds A New Level Of Planning Ahead

With skewed hangers like this made custom by simpson, this job is a challenge and i find it hard to keep ahead of my four man crew. Many things cannot be ordered too far ahead of time for field accuracy sake. Because nothing can be returned,. even the ilevel engineers were scratching there heads. Anyone with this kind of experience under there belt would be welcomed with open arms. It is going well but slow. I know this is pretty vague.

why cant a local fabricator make up any odd skewed hangers that are needed? I mean they do allow those fabricators to make structural steel connections no?

Thats a good point, we've been workin with ilevel and they wont seem to stand behind any other fabricators other than simpson and one other that i cant remember. But there is a column with a 4 way lvl connection that was fabed by a local guy,..so i'll look into that. But we still need to have the systems in place so as to determine angles,.. and that is the slow part because the engineered drawings and the field have not been identical. I have yet to see our engineer face to face. Thanks Smith!!

whats preventing you from taking the angles right off the plans well in advance? You are not dealing with any slope? all your angles are in plan view correct? and you know where your LVL beams are. you just need a joist count and layout, as far as I level not recognizing local fabricators have them fax you a specification, specifying material thickness and steel grade as well as acceptable welding method, mig or tig?

Re: Engineered Lumber Adds A New Level Of Planning Ahead

Yeah you are right Smith. But there are some things that were changed and missed that were not on the plans. And as the crew is plugging along i am helping them and trying to lay out missed and un thought of problem areas which include these infamous hangers. It's the same story where my mountain climbing boss has the plans in possession for months, while i am wrapping up other jobs and dumps a un thought out mess into my lap. I am managing, overseeing, laying out, and bangin nails, and tryin to keep ahead of the crew while my "boss" is on another vaca. I cant wait to get to the roof, all ilevel with $ 50,000 of steel ridge and valleys.
