Energy Efficiency Tax Credits

Are the tax credits for the total cost of the job or just the cost of materials ?

Re: Energy Efficiency Tax Credits

The following guidance is not intended as legal advice, and you should consult a tax professional with specific questions:
  • To qualify for the tax credit, windows, doors, and skylights placed in service after February 17, 2009 must have a U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) less than or equal to 0.30.
  • Qualifying products purchased between February 17, 2009 and December 31, 2010 are eligible for a tax credit equal to 30 percent of the product cost. The maximum amount of homeowner credit for all improvements combined (including roofing, insulation, HVAC, and water heaters) is $1,500 during 2009 and 2010.
  • For products purchased between January 1, 2009 and February 16, 2009, the terms of the tax credit are less clear. The Internal Revenue Service will likely clarify these terms in guidance documents, which are expected to be released later this year.
Bullet points #2 & #3 use the term "products purchased" however #1 says "placed in service". Got to love it!!

Yeah I read that whole webpage but it is not clear. It just says 30% of cost. I would think that means the total cost of the job, not just materials. Your average homeowner is not able to install most of the items that qualify for the tax credit.

I spoke to the EPA and they pointed me to a webpage that says installation is NOT included for windows, doors, insulation, and roofs. The tax credit for solar water heaters, solar panels, geothermal heat pumps, wind energy systems, and fuel cells is 30% of the cost plus installation costs, with no upper limit.

Here is the latest information on the Tax Credit from the IRS
Looks like the IRS is allowing homeowners to use the Manufacturers Certificate to prove the windows qualify rather then window NFRC stickers.
I have included a link if you need to read what the IRS is asking for not only for windows but other energy products:

Re: Energy Efficiency Tax Credits

I have found that it's for materials only to the homeowner, however as the contractor it is up to me break out the invoice for the customer. I also have the right to up charge for the materials I sell to the customer. That being said i usually break up 60% of the invoice to the homeowner as material cost.
