Employees Driving There Own Cars To Jobsites?

Right now i am doing a big project. My employee picks up the other 2 guys and just drives to the job site every day in his car. Job site is 10 minutes from where these guys live. Where i park my equipment is 25 minutes from where they live and then another 20 minutes to the job.

Enclosed trailer is parked at jobsite so they do not need to bring tools to the job. All material is delivered so they never leave the job site.

Some people tell me this is unprofessional? is it? When they leave the job site they just want to go home and not back to the shop. And this saves me money.

When we work out of town, i met them at a park and ride and drive.

This ok?

yep...

unprofessional? hell, every union out there works this way...and they are the professionals.

seriously...if it's a project (multiple days/weeks/months) it's perfectly acceptable and professional.

Re: Employees Driving There Own Cars To Jobsites?

lol ok. Its a win win for everyone. Employee saves gas. I save vehicle cost and paying for atleast 3 man hours of drive time a day. And i get more production hours.

Adventually, i'll pick up a pickup truck for the foremen to take home everyday. But right now we need to take baby steps.

I wouldn't be back logged log as far if i could just get out and do some jobs myself with a laborer! Hiring a good foremen defienetly has made me alittle lazy. I just want to sit in front of the laptop designing jobs now.

Re: Employees Driving There Own Cars To Jobsites?

I think having them go directly to the work site is the best thing as you describe it.

What is the point/benefit of having the guys log the extra miles to your shop...waste of time, fuel, etc.

It is not unprofessional to save time and money.

You might want to give the guy with the vehicle a little $ recognition for providing transportation for the others, but other than that I see nothing wrong here.

Talk to your insurance agent, you should have your company listed as additional insuree (sp) on their policies. If they get in an accident while going to your job site the injured person could come after you.

only if they are on the clock...otherwise every employee in the world would have to have their employer as an additionally insured...

I think there's a stip in the regs about if they're required to drive to a different site... best to make that phone call.

Re: Employees Driving There Own Cars To Jobsites?

I remodel. The guys drive to the job. It does create problems at times, particularly when parking is tight. Don't want to piss off my clients neighbors by having my carpenter park in front of their mailbox. We try to take things like that into consideration, but some guys just seem to get offended by parking in front of their house, like it is their personal property or something.

Then there are the turn arounds using a non-customer's driveway. Heaven forbid!

Good reason to just raise Your rates. If people ride share on their own ,is the employer responsible if they wreck ??? This is stupid

It will cost him nothing. It will protect him to a limit.

The concern is when an employee just drives down to the local Ace hardware to pick up a ***X and crashes. If the injured person finds out that he builds pools for the "big pool builder" then they might come after him.

Just curious as to what type of compensation you have set up for out of town travel. Currently, I pay mileage one way, that covers the fuel expense, what do you do for drive time? I have an upcoming job out of town that I will provide lodging for, but haven't considered drive town of approx 1.5 hrs one way.

This is true, we have this included in our commercial vehicle insurance.

I use to do that for my subs, I was a caulking and shim delivery man. $300 in one month ended that practice.
