Egress Window Install In Basement
quick ? guys. I am looking for an honest answer. Im buying a home and upgraded the windows to anderson 400's threw out the basement has 2 4x4 egress windows. I'm in the process of finding out the make of the windows and the well. Here is my question my builder stated that it would cost me 2500 per window If I wanted to put the 400's there he stated that I would need a bilco well and new forms made to support the 4x4 anderson window. Does this sound right. Im not sure how it matters about the well size if they are both sliding windows that are 4x4. Any help or resources would be appreciated. Thank you for your time

Re: Egress Window Install In Basement
Generally, egress windows have some minimum width and hights for the open portion. there is also an over-all open area requirement. These are usually common to all codes. It is usually dependant on what a person needs to get in and what a fireman and equipment need to get in.
There is one additional installation requirement that can control and different areas have some variations. It is the minimum and maximum sill height inside. It is the sill height and not the rough opening height. The reason is to allow children to get up and out. If you have a catalog and window number, you can determine if the window opening is adequate. To get the local sill height, check with the local code office to see what it is. An egress window installed at the wrong height will not qualify and that could be the reason for the wells. If your outside grade is high for drainage purposes, you may need a well. - Just a guess.
