Woke me up too.
I thought it was just another
semi rig passing the house.
Not as freaky as the one in '68.

Re: Earthquake In Southern IL

I didn't know you guys got e-quakes out there. Living in CA I've been through some really big ones (7.something in San Fran). Their scarry, but kind of cool. Feels like a roller coaster if they're big enough.

Re: Earthquake In Southern IL

I have never heard of you folks out in the middle states getting quakes, most quakes are on the western sea board and some here on the eastern sea board. When we get them they are usually in the low to upper 5's, shakes things up quite well.

Re: Earthquake In Southern IL

This was another from the
New Madrid fault system.
The biggest quake in recorded
history (USA) was the New Madrid
quake.
Mississippi ran backwards, church bells
rang in Boston.
Look up Reelfoot Lake in Kentucky
on a map.
It was created in a matter of hours
during that quake.
We too are waiting for
"The Big One."

My girlfriend woke up, and then woke me up, and said "Did you feel that?", I said "What, you shaking me while I'm trying sleep, yeah I felt that", then I went back to sleep.

Re: Earthquake In Southern IL

Believe or not, I remember one here in Nw Alabama. just enough to make someone say,"Did you feel that?" There was a piece in the paper about it a few days later. Did cause a sewer leak down the road a piece that washed a big hole in the road. It was blamed on the tremor anyway.

Re: Earthquake In Southern IL

Went through a 4+ in Fort Wayne Indiana in the late 80's - strangest thing I ever felt. Now I just dodge hurricanes in Florida - easier gig in my opinion. Just as a side bar - Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio contractors use to complain about the Indiana building code. We were UBC, just like California, at that time. Maybe now they know why.

Cheers

Re: Earthquake In Southern IL

Felt it here in the Detroit, Michigan area too. I was outside and like Neo I thought it was just a big truck passing by, we have a lot of heavy traffic and Jake Brake use just down the road. The the radio station cut in and said we had a small quake. Hard to tell as the heavy trucks make the house vibrate sometimes too.

It didn't dawn on me until a few minutes later but the wifes Quaker Parrot started making all kinds of noise just before I felt the vibrations, that struck me as strange as she is usually quiet in the mornings. Then it dawned on me she must have felt the quake too, but the vibrations from the big trucks never bother her. Must be able to tell the difference.

Re: Earthquake In Southern IL

We had a couple when I lived in Seattle, a 5.4 and 7.2 I think they were. 5.4 epicenter was much closer to us and was much rougher. It really was a big slam. Floor rolled in front of me, everything came off the walls. Really bizarre feeling. Mother in law thought a truck hit the house.

Same here. Scared the sh?? out of the dog too.
There was an after shock about 10:30ish too. I was here in my office and thought a wind gust blew by, but the wind was calm today.
Usually people associate California as having quakes but, geologically speaking, there are fault lines all across the US and although occur less frequent here, they cover more territory here then out west because the mountains will absorb most of the shock but will create more damaging effects in a concentrated area. The midwest is flatter and the quake will "travel" farther.
As for the poster who mentioned we are due for "our" big one, is absolutely right. More and more in the recent years, seismologists are paying more attention to the New Madrid fault line. I think they will more now. Research the 1812 earthquake that occurred here when you have time. Its very interesting. I didn't even know about it until a few years ago when I saw documentary on History channel.
Sorry this is so long, I am fascinated with weather and geology (hobby) and thought I would share.
BTW, I will not be surprised if we start seeing more, at least commercial buildings, being built to the seismic code out here. I have already started seeing this a few years ago. The new Autozone corporate headquarters, which is in Memphis, is done to seismic code.
