Dryer Lint Cleaning!

I was talking to an appliance repairman(also a fireman) the other day and we got on the topic of clothes dryers. He was telling me that 16,000 fires a year start in the laundry room. The #1 cause is dryer lint, most people pull out their screens and scrap the lint with their hand.. not enough. He told me to clean my screen as normal and then run it under water and see if it holds water. I could'nt believe it! Not one drop of water penetrated the screen that looked clean by eye.

He told that if it was plugged to clean it with dish soap and water.This would improve 3 things;

1) Less risk of fire.

2) Will use less energy.

3) Clothes will dry faster.

I have definately have noticed a difference with #3 and of course he told me to check my smoke detectors while I was at it. So, when you get a chance try the water on the lint screen test! It is good maintenence every few months.

Re: Dryer Lint Cleaning!

Wow
I knew that dryer lint caused a lot of fires
I clean out the vent a couple times a year
But I had no idea about washing the screen
Thanks for the tip

Re: Dryer Lint Cleaning!

This thread got me to thinking about what a great service this would be to offer to my clients once a year before the holidays. There is a lot of good info on dryer fires and cleaning of the dryer vents and motors.

These were my favorites:
