Drunk Hillbilly Contractors With Guns...

Just interesting the way some people portray contractors, but still want to do business with us!

I guess we've been stereotyped. Just because I have a "protected by Smith and Wesson" sticker on my truck, and a Jack Daniel's t-shirt, doesn't mean I'm a gun totin' redneck who likes his whiskey.
Or does it....
That's a funny ad. I guess they figure there aren't any Fulbright scholars amongst us.

I have seen that ad here on craigslist in orange county as well. It must be working for them.

Just remember the market you are aiming at, is the market you will attract. Based on all the attacks from these forums on contractors that market themselves on craigs, I think they have a pretty good handle on who their market is...

A surgeon client complained to a contractor about the quoted price and said, "I don’t make that much for my time, and I’m a surgeon."

To which the contractor responded:

“Neither did I when I was a surgeon.”

I've always gotten a kick out of the contractors that push bad at contractors that ad on CL. In all reallity, 50% of my mid-range to high-end work comes from CL.

I believe in putting my company name ANYWHERE i can do so to increase awareness of my company. As far as being the cheapest contractor on my local CL, I am not.

I think most contractors look at CL badly because they see the unlicensed handyman advertising on there. I tell my clients they can get someone cheaper to do their work! I also make them aware that cheaper is not always better, and I prove it with my ad and using the cheaper mans rates and references.

I tie my website in with my CL ad.
I make my CL ad as I would a web page.
I can also judge the number of out of work people that own a hammer or a tape measure. These people automatically become handymen when they get laid off or fired. I use this to my advantage because they are always willing to give out their rates over the phone and can back anything up with references. I point this out to customers.

Keep your friends close and your competition closer.

Examples from this year with CL.

West Columbia, S.C. 84 sq ft bathroom remodel. $12,000 25% down 4 progressive payments all on time. 2 issues resolved by communication.

Columbia, S.C. 72 sq ft bathroom remodel. $$7,000 simple retile of floor and beadboard on walls. Paid in full up front.

Irmo, S.C. 554 sq ft tile install, install sheetrock on ceiling, install french drain $15,000. 50% down 4 progressive payments paid on time.

Sub contract signed for major builder for repair of drywall on military housing on 2 bases. $350.00 per hole repair x 45 so far.

Sub contract signed for cable company to repair sheetrock after they complete installs. $350.00 per hole x 20 so far.

Hampton, S.C. $28,000 120 sq ft kitchen remodel. Contract signed 25% down job begins on 11/10.

CL ain't so bad if you use it and sale your company properly.

I wonder if the quality of leads generated, and the subsequent work opportunities they produce, vary in quality from region to region. Anybody in Southern Cal. advertising on Craig's? Any other CL success stories like Wizard's?
It sounds like he does well from it, and if presented correctly, could be a good source of job leads.

Keep this in mind. I advertise on CL in 2 states. S.C. and Ga.
The S.C. area CL produced These results.

My Ga. Ad does almost nothing. Not only is it a state by state but even a city by city difference in results. People and advertising are just different from one town to the next.

Good for you wiz, it's what you try, and then decide what works...plus, it's hard to biatchandmoan about something that costs you nothing (ie, free). Why not utilize it...? just my opinion

My closing rate for CL is the same as any other form of advertising I do ,
25%-40% ,which varies from month-to-month.Thank-you craigs list.

This is RICH! I didn't know Bryan had branched out. I know him and his work is pretty good. I've worked with him clothed and unclothed at WhiteTail.
