Driveway Pillars

I want to build 2 driveway pillars at the end of my driveway with lights and a place for the mailbox. I don't wany anything really high end just something that looks nice I am not sure how high or wide also would like to make it from stone. Should I pre build it over the winter and what materials do I need and any help would be nice Thanks Mark
