Drilling For Elec. Cables Through LVL's

I'll be starting a new project in the next few weeks. Today I was there setting up some temp lights and outlets. The building is over 100 years-old. Some, if not all, of the existing 1st floor floor joists have been sistered up to new LVL beams. My concern is drilling through them for electrical wiring. What would the building inspector have to say about that and what are some of the rules for LVLs as it would concern my job?

I had an unfair advantage, I just did all that research on them for the deck roof project.

I have always thought that the rules for these LVLs were brand-specific. I always try to get the info from the manufacturer that made the ones I am drilling.

Is that correct?

The differences won't cause
the house to collapse.

Probably more differences with TJI's.

Magnettica,
Your question regarding hole size in an LVL reminds me, when, 2 years ago doing a kitchen remodel, my plumber was on vacation so I called a local plumbing company for a bid. They came out, gave a bid, and afterwards I was talking with the lead guy and he told me someone is his company drilled a 4" dia waste hole in an LVL on someone's remodel. Cost $40k to fix.
I waited for my guy to get back into town.

A 40k screw up? That's pretty bad. I figured I'd ask here first, then get an ok from the GC before doing anything. This way if the building department had a problem with the holes it would be on the GC's shoulders, not mine or the company I work for.

In general, if you drill only in the middle third, side to side, and in the middle third top to bottom with "wire size" holes, you're always okay. If you need to drill bigger holes for conduit and such, that's when I break out the paperwork. A big batch of LVL's will normally come with a few of the manufacturer's booklets stapled to them here and there.
