Do You Use A Map Or GPS?

the GPS looks like it might be useful, but I'm not so sure that it wouldn't be just another gadget that costs - although if its a valuable tool I'd sure get one. I had two estimates to do this morning, and the first one was in a "strange" place. I think I found it by luck alone! and a lot of driving, fortunately I was on time. My map is wrong!!!! second place was easy to find as it was only a few miles from my house.
Wondering what most of you all use to find places you've never been.

thx

Mac!!

GPS I love it. The best part is when driving in city areas it will get you going right even if you miss a turn.

My trucks and phones all have GPS. DC is one of the hardest places to navigate. I have been here over 10 years and still get lost without the GPS.

It is great on trips out of town to when we go pick up supplies or vacations. You can buy one for 200 bucks now

GPS, best thing since sliced bread, I just switched vehicles and I'm debating what to do with my map books, put them in the van, store them, throw them out, not sure yet.

Wow, guess I'm old school...still use a map.

Know where I'm going most of the time, so don't really need that often anyway.

Come down to DC. When you ask people for directions here they think about it for a minute then they say follow me. It's that hard to give directions

GPS, they're really affordable now. Got mine just over a year ago. I loaned it to a buddy for a week...worst week of my life.

Re: Do You Use A Map Or GPS?

If you didn't rely on the GPS so much you would know how to get where you're going. It is like speed dial. You press a button and the phone dials the right number, but if the phone isn't there you haven't a clue what you best suppliers number is besides #21.

I have a GPS and use it when I need to. Makes things a hell of a lot easier. I had a job to look at that would have been very difficult to find without. New area, my maps didn't even have it on there. I have the one that speaks the names of the roads. Helps you learn the names of the roads for future travel without the GPS

Hell, I went down there one time...had an atlas, 3 maps and about 20 pages printed off of Expedia maps.

I'll borrow a GPS next time.

yep, get one. You won't be sorry. I turn the annoyingly nice lady voice off. Can't stand it. "In .3 miles....turn left......turn left....when possible, make a u-turn.....arriving at destination.....recalculating...."

I'm sure just about everyone here has mastered the art of reading the map book, placed on the steering wheel, while driving, I keep thinking what happens when the GPS takes a crap (or stolen, I've got a portable one now), I'll be lost in the middle of nowhere, with no way back. I actually have a box full of maps from around the country, tons of them (used to travel for work), I think this is the year I get rid of them all, eBay? Recycle bin?

My new GPS has a picture slide show, just need to load it up with bikini babes and I'll be all set, already changed the display vehicle to an airplane, from now on I want you all to call me Captain.

Can't do the batroom thing, I'm already supposed to have painted them for the last few years, that would take a decade.

I use a blackberry and use the gps feature all the time.
It works out for me especially because I sometimes use my car to run around or meetings and of course in my truck most of the time. It's always there even if riding with someone.

Re: Do You Use A Map Or GPS?

No it works off satellites- If you are like most of us with those big ole fat fingers- there is a free voice recognition program the save a lot of typing once you get used to it. I use the gps along with a find feature- voice in "such and such" lumber yard- it searches- you can get a location and gps to it and/or dial the #.
I'll bet a lot of the older guys here remember the infernal pager before cell phones got to be affordable. It would always buzz when your on the roof and then you had to decide if you should get down, get in your truck and find a payphone to make the call.
