Do You Think This Is A Good Idea?
I do mainly painting and some drywall. I'm starting to get into more commercial work. I got in touch with a GC for some commercial work. He said I could do the paint and drywall on a plaza, but asked if I know anyone that does metal stud framing because his sub is no longer available. I know very little about metal studs, but I know someone who's a subcontractor who does it. I told the GC I could bring the guy over on Tuesday to see the facility and provide a bid.
I was thinking of taking the framer to see the bid, have him give a bid to me, and me tackle a tad more to the price to make some money out of it. Basically, subing it out to my friend and making some money for getting the lead. I think it's kinda risky because what if my friend bails out for whatever reason. He's been doing it for a long time, but never for me. What do you think? |

Always sub that which you can not or will not do.
Always make money on sub-work. If you are afraid he will bail, then do not deal with him from the get-go. If you do and he does bail, you will be able to handle it. But you are not there yet so stop the worry.

I'm gonna call about 5 of his references just to be safe. What do you think is the percentage I should mark up? |

Re: Do You Think This Is A Good Idea?
What ever you can get away with.
Talk about a % from HIS end. Not what he quotes +. If he opens his mouth to the customer then BLAM the customer is now pissed at you for the markup. (although a markup is standard practice). You can even get a % from him and a small markup from the customer. What he says he will do it for should be what he is comfortable with so there should be no problem. Ask others. BUT GET PAID as many ways as you can WITHOUT raping either party.
