Re: Do You Have Health Insurance?

I took early retirement from my previous employer which provides medical coverage for the wife and I until age 65. If I didn't have that I'd be looking at $1200 a month for similar coverage.

Feel the same way in my mind (about would love to save that money) , but cannot afford to take the chance with two high school age kids and wife. That $50K will not even get you two days in the hospital for treatment of any serious injury or problem requiring tests and scans. I have been there. What an incredible fung rip off when you are a private paying patient. You pay a mininum of three times what the insurance companies pay for every procedure.

And now for my bitch.. Blue CrossBlue Shield that stated at $800 a month 3 years ago is now at $1400, and every three months they send an ammendment excluding something else from coverage. Definately time to change.

Re: Do You Have Health Insurance?

I had thought this was a business related question.....Seems like it's a personal insurance issue.....What about employees? How many offer it to your employees? and to what extent?

Reading through these posts makes one realize that the health insurance system is ****ed up. I'm lucky that my wife has an excellent program through the hospital, She is a nurse, and pays $48 a month for our families benefits. We're obviously one of the lucky ones

Good luck to all, I hope this country can get this sorted out in the very near future.

Well now, I will pipe up as a Canadian....I used to live there

Lawndart you DO NOT want universal health care

The system is slow...extremely slow

I have had health issues in both countries

Back Surgery in both countries

Canada...4 months to diagnosing...them agreeing I have a problem...6 months for an MRI (I couldn't wait I paid Buffalo MRI $ 500.00 for next day) and 2 more months to get on the table

USA...5 days for primary physician to send me to specialist and MRI...within 3 days surgery (Total under 2 weeks)

Canada....cost 18% of your income tax which is 2 -3 times what you pay here

USA....the plan you pick

Canada...doctors have a salary cap, meaning they limit themselves to what there salary pays thems since the goverment writes them their paychecks

USA...Skys the limit

Cancer patients in Canada wait 6+ months for treatment and some travel over 300 miles for that treatment

You don't hear of that in the USA

When was the last time you heard of a doctor leaving the US to go practice medicine in Canada? never, vise versa...all the time

I will admit there needs to be some improvement to the US medical system, but do not take universal health care

I agree that a universal system wouldnt be the best. There is nothing wrong with what the US has except what it costs.

The cost of medical care is stupid. My grandma had a galbladder removed and was in the hospital 3 days and it was $30,000.

My dad had a double hernia fixed which is outpatient now and it totaled about 10k.

Even if it could be cut in half it would still be expensive but not cost you your lifes work in 5 days.

it's only too expensive if you don't bill for it....there is no reason that a self employed person can not figure an extra $1000/month into their OH to have health insurance for their family...it's just reckless to not...

Re: Do You Have Health Insurance?

we pay a bit over $900 a month for Oxford. My scrips still cost me anywhere from $75 to $125 a pop. Office co pays are $40. My wife was recently diagnosed type 2 diabetic, I am an asthmatic who can no longer pass a treadmill test but my heart and cholesterol levels are fine due to tests and a recent heart catheter procedure. Then theres the acid reflux disease. In May our policy renews at $1200 a month.

$600 for ours through Health Choice....and if my wife wanted to, she could drop it and do the Indian Health Care for free, since she is Native American. A catastrophic policy covering only me with a high deductible would be around $175.

Re: Do You Have Health Insurance?

Back in the early 90's, the wife and I got out first policy. Blue cross. $210 a month, $500 deductable. At nine months in, our premiums jumped to $600, without a claim. It kept creeping up and up It was $1200 a month within 5 years, right when I knocked the wife up, we were paying $1500 and a $2500 deductable. Well I broke my leg in 2001, and soon after my premium went up to $2000 a month, Yes, $2000 a month!!!!!! That was it, we switched to Unicare, and a $2500 deductable, it was about $500 a payment. Soon it too, started up, and the coverage was nothing compared to the Bluecross we had previously. Had a hernia operation, and ended up paying 4 times my deductable. That about broke me, Thank god for AFLAC supplimental insurance!!! We changed to another off brand and it too, sucked. Tried another and it too sucked. About a year ago the wife changed us back to Blue cross. Started at $450 a month with a $2500 deductable. Now our premiums are $565. So it is a big racket, if you ask me!!

Re: Do You Have Health Insurance?

I know a farmer who had his own health insurence and it was $1200 a month. He had a mild heart attack and it went up to over $2500 per month and he had to drop it. Now hes uninsuable because of the heart attack.

Re: Do You Have Health Insurance?

Family of four 33, 30, 11, 8, cost around $750.00,

I think our max out of pocket is $3,000.00 per year. $35.00 doc visits, $40.00 special visits.

Its okay for the money.

Re: Do You Have Health Insurance?

Our cost through our insurance carrier for a single employee is $278.00 per month. A family plan is around $748.00. We also just received a notice that our rates are going up 32% as of April 1st. (nice huh? - and this is from a nationally-known company that we moved our plan to less than 6 months ago).

Just for some information on health benefits.....we pay the first $200 per month of everyone's health costs and anything above that is paid by the employee. I'll probably adjust it upwards to cover the additional cost of the health insurance premium if the rates do indeed rise the 32%. This includes all management and field personel - all employees. I don't know how that relates to other companies but we've been using this formula for about 5 years. Before that, we paid 100% of the employee's cost but being a small company, we couldn't continue along that path and stay profitable.

There you go, everyone send me $100 a month.

Ok but being serious, Im not sure how it could be done but I think insurence companies are like the big oil. Theyblow the money they make so when the need more its easier to just raise your rates. Its like a funeral home, they know you HAVE to have them so the rape you on the bill.
