Do We Like?

Do we like Ikea here. I was checking them out over the weekend. They have a lot of nice stuff at a great price. Everything from kitchen cabinets to appiances to furniture. I was wondering if any of you guys have ever installed any of there kitchen cabinets.

Ps i realize they might not be in all areas. But they have a fairly new store in Chicago.

My daughter has a bed from there. Ikea is sorta the 'Cadillac' of put-to-together-yourself furniture. Not junk, but not exactly fantastic. I have no idea what their kitchen stuff might be like.

Yeah, unfortunately I've put together lots of it. If all the pieces are in the box and if the holes are all drilled where they are supposed to be, it's not hard to wind up with passable pieces of sh!t cabinets.

Ikea stuff is okay, but you can only assemble it once. Forget what they say about taking it apart and taking it with you when you move. It will break when you dissassemble it.

Last time I was in an Ikea store was 15 years ago in Pittsburg, I bought some stuff for my apartment, looked cool and was cheap. Things must have changed with them if people actually are using their stuff in their kitchens.

I was at a Trim-Out today where the homeowner provided light fixtures from IKEA, none of them had a U.L. approval or in my mind were even safe at all. Needless to say I did not install them but this is the only experience I have ever had with IKEA.

Re: Do We Like?

We had an Ikea open in CT a few years ago. I went once out of curiosity and from what I saw, it would be perfect for a young couple just starting out, a vacation home, or a studio type apartment, or like MD said - kids furniture. THe parking lot is ALWAYS packed, I don't like it. I also can't STAND crowded stores that corral you like cattle.

Were they the bare lamp fixtures with a large paper "baloon" shade? I've put up a few of them. The lampholder itself does have a UL sticker, but the entire fixture is not UL listed. That prospect doesn't excite me either.

Re: Do We Like?

shunk,
Exactly. Those fixtures spec out a 60watt type A lamp but there is only about 1" between the lamp and the rice paper shade. There was also a flex track system that was so flimsy that it coiled up in a knot when I unrapped it (TECH lighting look a like) I told the ho that I would not install these because of the liability factor and she totally understood and appreciated my concern.

I've experienced this too- just on a bookshelf, but I was thinking, OMG what a piece of junk! However, I've noticed that some items of theirs are better quality then others. Sadly, we have a lot of things from Ikea, and frequent it a lot! When we drive past on the fwy, my kids yell, "IKEA!!!!"

We did a kitchen remodel for a customer's rental house, and she insisted on Ikea cabinets. and we had pieces missing too. At our Ikea they pass out cards of companies who specialize in installing their kitchen cabinets, for pretty cheap, so we just let them deal with it.
