Diggler On Stupid Questions

The only reason I don't give it an A, is due to the rude comments which some members make when someone asks a reasonable question. I guess that is part of construction worker mentality, and should be considered part of being in the field .

If you can't handle it, .....

hmm ... the "construction worker mentality"

"Hi guys - I have worked in the corporate world for 20 years and got sick of it!!! my boss was a prick. So I decided to start a construction company. I've always liked working with my hands. I actually have my first remodel job to look at and the people are really nice. I have a friend who has been an electrician for 30 years and he's seen & wired enough remodels he can help me. Also, I have another friend who is slow right now and said he'd help with labor.

I was wondering though, if anyone here could help me price this job out? It's an 1800 sq. ft. addition and kitchen remodel. Thanks in advance!! Also - what's the going rate for a framer now? I have the feeling my friend is charging me too much"

This is a stupid question. It is unreasonable and very ignorant. Actually, it's pretty insulting and assuming as well, when you think about it.

Nope, sorry - not apologizing for feeling this way. And no, I am certainly not a construction worker. I might have to dig some holes, get muddy, get wet, pick dried pipe dope off my armhairs - but I am no construction worker.

It just blows me away seeing a question like that though. And there are alot of them. WTF - if you cannot price a job yourself, how in the hell are you going to be able to do it???

Have I ever been "off" on an estimate? Well certainly. But never so much that it drove me into bankruptcy. Yes, I have done some jobs that we're pushing my limits - but any unfamiliar tasks were well thought out and planned and, if necessary, consulted with specialists, manufacturers, others, etc. But never walking blindly into something. And certainly pricing it as accurately as possible.

You have to be able to use your head in whatever you're doing. Going on a chat board or whatever and asking a question like that - that does not speak much for the mentality behind the avatar.

"Do I need a license? Where can I get insurance?"

Please. Someone is going to hire you for a $10,000 job and you don't know how to find an insurance agent??? No really - isn't that a little backwards?

It's not even so much the questions - it's the mentalities behind the questions. I certainly do not expect everyone to agree with this, or even understand - heck, or not even be offended by what I've said.

and yes, I do realize everyone must start somewhere - I am TOTALLY sympathetic with that and if anyone knows, it is I - how tough it is starting from nothing. But there are TONS of other resources besides the internet. Like an attorney, an accountant, an insurance agent. The best of all - these people can give you the RIGHT (hopefully, lol) answers right away!!! Just a phone call away, or a trip down town.

The good thing about the internet is the amount of information available - which is also the worst thing about the internet. I have to question the mentality of someone who would venture to structure their business around what was said on a forum.

How's that for a "construction worker's mentality"

Re: Diggler On Stupid Questions

i get that a lot. had one man who kept asking me questions about framing a garage. I practicly told him everything he needed to know, then he asks the million dollar question "How much should I charge?" I simply told him what I charge and what he can charge are 2 entirely different amounts. first off you are a handyman, me I am a corporation. Second is how can you charge pro rates when you are not a pro?? He got pissed and walked off. I hate ones like that. do some research for the field you are working. Consider your overhead, and profit margin, everyones is different.

I miss living in VA, we use to have fun picking on those people. You could go to any public place and find the idiot in the crowd and ask him what part of West Virginia he was from......and he would tell you. To this day I can not figure out how that state line determines one's IQ.

The Song is "Flagpole Sitta" by Harvey Danger.
