Deck Awning Demolition Questions

I would like to remove my deck awning and wanted some pointers from you guys on how to go about it. I'm a mason by trade so this is not my daily function. I've posted some pics. Please offer suggestions.

Thanks

Re: Deck Awning Demolition Questions

Get some real long cable, tie one side to the bottom of the posts,
the other to you car or truck, leave lots of slack, then floor the
vehicle, take up the slack, and presto, no more awning, drag it down
the block, look around and if you don't see anyone, unhook and take off.

Seriously, you could take it apart piece by piece, a lot more work
than pulling it down in one piece but you'd have a better chance
of not causing damage to the house and probably a lot safer.
You could pull it down in almost one piece if you use some temporary
supports near the house and detach it from the ledger and remove
the roof connection, flashing and push it away from the house. Make
sure all connections to the house are undone I've seen a lot of damage
done to a house when people simply tried to pull down an attached
structure.

I would take it off piece by piece.

But I don't demo like most guys do.

Start with the plywood on top and then carefully take off the joists one by one and etc...

There's a lot of good lumber in there, unless there's hidden rot. It's just about as fast to take it apart piece by piece as to turn it into a pile of garbage and then deal with it. Get a nail puller and go for it, you'll be surprised how fast it comes apart. If the deck isn't glued you can take a 4x4 of appropriate length and 'punch' the deck up off the fasteners.

Re: Deck Awning Demolition Questions

I was thinking piece by piece would be the best way as well. The auto option is appealing though . 90% of the wood is good. The roof leaks and is rotted and I've had enough of the bees, wasps and yellow jacks nesting. I'm gonna replace it with a retractable cloth awning. Doing this will also give me more light in the room behind it.
