Customer Working...
Hello all,
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this: Customer wants to a commercial renovation. However, they also want to be involved and do some work too. Has anyone had any experiences with this?

Re: Customer Working...
Im in residential so it s a little different, but we allow the client to do work as long as it wont interfere with what were doing, we have no isues with them removing tile, stripping drywall ( we dont want them touching the framing for obvious structural reasons. we let them the first coat of paint on trim before its installed just as long as its ready for us when were ready for it. they can clean up the site,
anything technical and its hands off. not to mention some clients are just plain annoying to have around, gettting in the way, asking the same pointless question 15 times a day about why did the electrician have to make another hole in the wall when hes upgrading the service |

Re: Customer Working...
They can do what ever want until you step foot on the job. Once you start the job your insurance does not cover anyone but your employees or subs on your job.
If he demands anything other than just that. Move on and forget about this job. Make sure if you decide to do this job then put in a disclaimer to cover you with this client. Good Luck |

Re: Customer Working...
I think that it is a great idea. Contrary to what others may have said, I think it would be very good for the progress of the job to do some work.
Just tell him to make the decisions when they need to be made, write the check, and STAY OUT OF THE WAY! Another thing you can do is send him to the store for ___________ (insert the imaginary part, tool, or soft drink) |

Re: Customer Working...
There are people who are not in a position to shell out large dollars on unforseen repairs, and if someone wants to help themselves by digging a ditch ,or busting and pouring concrete and asphalt,or removing some type of landscaping, that's fine with me.There's more than one way to help people.
The money takes care of itself if you are out there doing good. What you don't get here, you'll pick-up there, and the people will never forget you. That's bein my experience anyways, happy to say. |

Re: Customer Working...
Commercial? Can't do in my state. Not commercial.
Residential? I'd consider it but write up a separate contract with schedule for the work they want to perform, along with performance and quality penalties just like for a subcontractor. If they want to play, fine, but they need to play like a big kid.

Re: Customer Working...
Thanks for the input, guess I won't touch that one
![]() I've actually never had a customer want to work before. I initially didn't think it would be a good idea, but thought I'd get some valuable input here. I'll politely inform the customer that it's not in his or my best interest

Re: Customer Working...
Do it often. Can't remember any problems off the top of my head. Have 4 ongoing jobs like that now. I treat it like contract labor and show up when needed or even leave certain areas for the client to do, from busting concrete to painting. As a rule, we end up working side by side like teamwork and he writes the check at the end of the day/week/month, or job. With a smile.
Like threaderman said.

Re: Customer Working...
Listen to the guys. Don't do it. Tell him you appreciate his enthusiasm however you insurance doesn't allow you to have non-employees to perform work on your project due to liability concerns.
