Curbless Showers
Can anyone recommend a source for design data to put curbless (roll-in) showers into new construction homes? I want to start building them this way as a value-added feature in my spec homes. Not sure where to find specific info for framing this into a floor system (or forming it into a slab, for that matter). We put one in a master bath on a major remodel, and it was a serious PITA. Cutting the floor, sinking the joists, etc. Any advice appreciated.

Re: Curbless Showers
You might poke around on the government's ADA website. They've got lots of suggested construction details on other things, so I'd bet a roll-in shower is one of them.
Here's one thing I dug up in a minute, but I'm sure there's more: http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/descrip...a/fig57des.htm |

Re: Curbless Showers
Here's another good site, as far as finding guidelines.

Re: Curbless Showers
Thanks, I'll check them out. I'm trying to move into the "50+" market segment. Designs that allow aging comfortably in a home are a big deal.

Re: Curbless Showers
You betcha. With housing sales slowing or stopping, remodeling is zooming right now. Accessibility considerations are near the top of the list when remodeling now, without regard to the present age of the occupants.

Re: Curbless Showers
I've done several in slab-on-grade new construction. It's easy when it's designed in. Just recess the slab by 3-1/2" when they pour the slab. It needs to be properly located and spec'd in the foundation plan.

Re: Curbless Showers
Join the NKBA, a very obvious direction design is being focuses on is aging in place and the NKBA are the forerunners in this. With your membership you will have access to as much of that stuff as you want.

Re: Curbless Showers
Thanks for the info. I am probably going to be slab on grade, so it is good to know it is as simple as that. I did a sunken Endless Pool a couple years ago, in a basement slab, and after that job, anything else should be no sweat.
I'll check out NKBA. |
