Question

CT Directory... And You

I was checking out the CT directory, and was a bit suprised that not many of you have profiles, I seached las vegas / Los angeles and not many results came up. considering its free, north of 40,000 members and it's the best contractor forum around... I tried talking my company's owner into joining and asked his permission to post our companies info, however his reply was "what for!? the internet doesn't work!" --- I disagree, but whatever... he'll look into it.

Has any one been called to bid a project as a result of posting on CT Directory? and does posting a link, help your websites ranking in the major search engines?

I have gotten a few jobs from folks that were directed to this site after googling a key word or phrase.

I was gonna put contact information on here but then I heard about Malco calling people at 3 in the morning, drunk and looking for a ride.

That's funny and sounds like something he would do.Much funnier if it happens to someone else!

Re: CT Directory... And You

Depends on how one uses this site. To give or get useful information, idea feedback, or unwind and bs.
I found the site while searching info on decking. Got good info from lurking, then came back with a question on metal roofing. One stop shopping for info so to speak.

Some come and rant with opinions and comments that others would not like their customers to see.
So if searching for your company ends them here in a thread with some off the wall comments, how would that look for your company.

Reading the thread on sharing links. Someone brought up the concern of being linked into a network that may end up in a bad "neighborhood". Not the CT is a bad place by any means, I think it is great.
But to what extent do you want your company/work life to reach into your personal life and opinions?

As the HO's & DIY's are usually shown the door, in some creative ways. Using this as a contractor to contractor referral is a possible benefit from giving a full profile. I think that most members who hang around long enough will make connections with those that have at least basic info available.

Re: CT Directory... And You

Well... I'm not sure why, but over the last year or so I have actually tried to sign up for the free directory listing several times without success.
I don't know what happens, but I get all the confirmation emails and all that, but when I go back days, weeks or months later and do a directory search by zip code or my company name, it never shows up.
So I just gave up on it. Maybe this is one reason why their are so few listings.

Re: CT Directory... And You

Yeah get that, we all unwind a bit here and tell it like it is sometimes, and that might be more "raw" information than your clients might like sometimes. but their are many of you who play it straight and professional, even when disagreeing with the rest of us, and I think that puts a good light on your business.

All I'm saying is, right now it seems like a good time to take advantage of any Free advertising offers, if you could find 10 or 20 free listing services (yellow pages, craigs list, kijiji, CT, etc.,etc.,) then one just might pay off, especially if you have a website in need of traffic. Funnel more traffic to your site, and even if you don't get work you might walk away with a better page rank from google or yahoo, which should lead to more business down the road.

A wise man makes opportunities, not "finds" them...

After that much time, you only have 14 posts?

You need to average more than one per month.

Maybe, it is just like Signature Links or posting URL's, where you need a certain amount of posts first to get eligible.

Re: CT Directory... And You

I'm working on this guys. I got discouraged a while back because it seemed like no one was filling out the info right and even more people were taking advantage of the system. Adding multiple listings and listing their companies in every category just so they would show up more.

I'm cleaning it up now (over the next few days) and trying to catch back up.

Do me a favor though. Log into your account and make sure you've entered in all the info needed to make your listing useful. Here's a hint... if you don't list your city and state your listing is getting deleted.

This is probably due to the fact that someone who types with a pencil taped to their nose could type faster than I do…

But on the other hand, I'm also spread out over like 10 other trade forums, so just can't always find time to make relevant posts on all of them that often.

You don't need to make relevent posts on all 10 forums........only this one. That's written somewhere in the T.O.S. and if it isn't, it should be.

Yes they do. You can look back at my past post for examples of this.
