Craiglist - Why The Hate?

I my get flamed for this but just some dumb questions...
- Why are you guys/ gals so against Craigslist?
- Does anyone on here post on Craiglist?
- If you think Craiglist is that bad, why are you looking at it?
Just FYI - I don't post on Craiglist. I have been on there maybe 2 or 3 times at most but I am curious as to why so much hate for it.

I'm guessing because it lowers the bar (yet again) about the kind of expectations/pricing that consumers can expect. I think it provides some good comic relief as well.

We actually post in it daily, but have never gained any work from it.

I don't think all the hate is directed at Craig or his list... it is the unlicensed, uninsured, non-tax paying illegal frauds that call themselves contractors that advertise there because there is no real "checks" in place for advertising on it....

i dislike it because it is leading to the further decline and dumbing down of society...there was a great documentary a few years ago called "Idiocracy"...

that and they are doing away with the ho ads

There is nothing wrong with Craiglist, the problem is with people who post there. HO disrespect our trade, thinking that we are all starving and they can take advantage of the situation, by posting the scope of the work and what they will pay... some ridiculous price.
At the same time, some hacks, who advertise there, who do the same thing to HO by offering low rates, taking money and never return or botch the job up, giving the rest of us legitimate guys a bad name.

So the few post that you have seen on CT in regard to Craiglist, where about such HO's or advertisements that looked and sounded like the hacks could only post them. Other then that Craigslist is Craigslist, you want an escort or massage you find it there and also STD, you want a hack, you will find it there also... at the same time, there is also a possibility of finding someone legit.... That is my opinion

There's only two things wrong with CL. First is the fact that it's free in most places. A legit business would have no problem paying for any advertising venue. But since there's no charge, any wanna-be can advertise.

Second, there's no policing the ads other than folks flagging them. If an unlicensed hack puts an ad up, it's unlikely it will get removed. I flag every one I can, but it does no good.

Agreed. Anyone can post a listing, so you have to weed through a lot of fraud before you come across a seemingly legitimate posting. Time consuming!

The difference between Craiglist & Ebay is non-profit versus profit goals. Craiglist does not make profitable business, owned by no one yet, does not produce large income$, just enough some little ad$ & some donation$ to keep servers maintained & some management teams that''s all,.. so they don't care about reputation., don't care about prostitute's killers hiding, don't care about low ballers, frauds, or illegal rants, about world crazyness, etc.. and don't have enough $$ to pay cyber cops to babysit and clean up after everyone's messes every minute either.

Pure & simple as that.

CraigsList has it's pro's and con's like everything on the Internet.

-Free
-Simple to use
-Can help with your SEO


Con
-Since it's free, there is a lot of garbage posted
-No monitoring beyond users flagging posts for removal
-Many HO's looking for deals (not your best prospect in any economy)

I use it daily to buy tools from people who need money asap and don't want to bother with pawn shops.

As for professionals, they shouldn't need to stoop to using a want ad directory.

I'm going to try out a CL poster wanting a bedroom built in a garage, in his ad was a bunch of BS about this and that, paying up to $16hr . So I emailed him, said you could waste a bunch of money on an amatuer or get someone who whos what they're doing, wants to meet now. What the heck, never tried the ol' CL

I suggested a customer go to Craigslist yesterday. She wanted me to start on the project today, and install crown according to her price, unseen. I told her that I do not do business that way, when she told me that all contractors have no work and she knew it, I told her I was confused because I am actually booked till 6-24, and if she wanted to dictate the price and start date, craigslist may be a better place to look for contractors. But before I let her go I asked if she wanted a carpenter that was so desperate for work that they would show next the morning, or one that is consistently 3-4 weeks out even in this economy.

She called back bout 30 min later and asked when I could come out to meet her and give her an estimate, lol...
