Contractor Talk & Time Management

I was sitting in the office today and I got to thinking, how much time we spend each day, when we are "working" at the desk, on Contractor Talk. One could argue that we are working, reading to research for some specific topic, but I know I more times than not, I am enjoying myself reading, responding & laughing at different threads. Judging by the amount of "regulars" I see here during the day, I have to assume I am not alone.

I once was so enthralled by a thread on here (serious, not funny) that I had my secretary take a message and say I was in a meeting!!!

Also, if we were to walk in on an employee of any position (secretary, sales, estimator, project manager, etc..) on here, would you frown upon it for wasting company time, or lean over their shoulder and see the latest advice, or the newest "how much" member getting ripped into? On one hand is were the boss, their the employee, so it's do as I say not as I do. On the other hand, we lead by example.

NO DOUBT, this is an amazing website, to many of us invaluable, and to others, maybe a little bit obsessive, or a combination. But do you think it sometimes affects our time management and getting other things done?

100% and if you have a problem with that we can step outside and resolve it

there are many days I curse Nathan and the members here for my lack of progress.

Speak for yourself Bub!
My time is valuable, so valuable I charge by the minute. I'm also slow right now so we'll see what happens in a couple of months.
That's $6.23 you owe me to set you straight

Re: Contractor Talk & Time Management

Obsessed? Oh hell yes...and I have let CT intrude on all aspects of my life to some small degree.
BUT, right now is not the best time for me and my little contracting company, and CT has lessened that blow considerably.

Good question to pose in a thread however, and something to think about for sure.

Re: Contractor Talk & Time Management

I've solved the problem by billing my CT time to whatever job I feel like, calling it research. Works for me!

....and the answer is YES!
I find women more entertaining than CT, but only for very brief and specific encounters.
Apart from that, I'd rather sit on here and laugh and learn.

Serious reply: If they're doing it on my nickel when there's actual work waiting to be done, I'd rip 'em a royal new one. If they're filling in some unavoidable down time, I'd applaud 'em for being here rather than cruising joke & **** sites (though at moments this can resemble either!).

Does this site affect my time management? Absolutely; the Honey Do list is dustier than the Dead Sea Scrolls. But when it comes to interfering with the money-making workday, you guys are !poof! faster'n if Mom walked in while I was looking at naked wimmen.

Now excuse me while I go look in the corners again for some of those money-making workdays...

Times being what they are, I'd sure as hell rather be on CT with my brothers-in-trades than sitting waiting for the phone to ring.

Re: Contractor Talk & Time Management

I think we would all rather be out making some cash then posting on here, but times are what they are. Now would I rather hang out with my wifes bestfriends husband, who I guess is supposed to be my friend by default, or come here and act the fool with a bunch of contractors that I have never met ? I never liked that guy, he aint my peoples, you is my peoples.

Re: Contractor Talk & Time Management

Good question. I am sure I would not want anyone that works with me on this site. I am the one who does the research, thus I am the one who needs this place!

As far as time management, I have been here now for 3 months and I usually hit the site for an hour a day with an average of 2 posts. Problem is sometimes you get caught up in one post for that whole hour reading the responses. Then I am screwed!

Re: Contractor Talk & Time Management

Outside of this site I really don't have much of a place to discuss business. It's like a huge builder's association where I don't even need to travel to be a part of...or pay dues.

The only time I was obsessing was when I used to frequent the P&R section. I had to quit that cold turkey...not only did I commit the crime of holding anything but a conservative christian opinion, but I'm a canuck too......

Some of the longer active threads can really suck you in.

I have come close to peeing my pants at the computer. Not only from the laughs, but from not wanting to walk away. Like some old blue-hair in Reno playin' the slots!

I can forgive you for the conservative christian opinion, I will have to think long and hard about you being a canuck

Oh you dont know the half of it my brother, this dude once asked me if I could rewire his car. I asked him why, he said the wiring went bad and now only one headlight comes on, I changed the bulb for him instead. He drives trains for a living, makes me nervous when I stop at railroad crossings knowing that he might be at the controls.
