Concrete Bid

I have been doing deck platforms along with the concrete fottings for a national company for about a year. I am a sub for them. Recently they fired the crew doing block foundations when they came up (which is not often) and asked me if I could do it. Basicly they are going to a trench footing where I would dig down 42" (I am in Minnesota) by 12 to 16" wide. I can handle the digging and forming but 2 areas I am stumped is at the top of the footing how do I make sure all 3 walls are level when they are basicly at ground level. The 6" of ground clearance doesnt apply to the room structures because they are aluminum. If you have a 16" trench how do you get the top down to 8"x2-3 tall along the whole top when theres nothing to stake into except the edge which is 9" away?

Another concern is I really dont know what the going rate is in this area. Either for flatwork or demo of flatwork.
Heres an idea. The job coming up is roughly 12 out from house 14 along front edge and 12 back to house,so 38 lineal feet of foundation that will run 42" deep and approx 16" wide, can someone give me an idea what this job is worth. There is access for a mini back hoe. But I am just interested in a labor plus material bid. I can add the rentals. If anyone can help me I would greatly. Also how would I calculate the concrete quanity?

Sincerely,
A tired contractor
(The rooms these guys do are always add-ons so there are always 3 walls)

Re: Concrete Bid

You need about 8 yards of concrete -- not sure how much that costs you up there (here, $120/yd)

Say 2 guys to help with the pour ($200 -- I'm guessing???)

with a 2-ft. bucket, it shouldn't take any longer than an hour to dig 38 ft. But chances are --- you'll be paying a minimum of some type of the mini-hoe (I'm guessing $400/day???) Even if you hired an excavator, you'd still hit minimum & mobe/de rates

I say a minimum 4 hrs. for your dig (oh, I'm assuming you're the operator). Is it laid off?? No?? Ok, another hour.

So

$120/yd - 10 yards (get two more to avoid surcharges) = $1200
2 Labors/$100 each = $200
Day Min for MiniHoe = $400
5 Hours (you) = 300
Mileage = $50
Overhead Charge = $120

Total = $2270

@ 30% Mark Up = $681 + 2270 = $2951

$700 bucks for maybe a total of 4 hours of work. (2 for the dig and layout, and 2 for the pour)

Is it the going rate?? I dunno, that's soooo subjective.

Re: Concrete Bid

Maybe you could do it in two pours..the footing then form your eight inch wall on that..or counterlever some 2x4s exstending them over the trench then attach ur form for the eight inch wall to them ...pour up to the bottom all around first then come back and top the forms for ur wall off...hope this helps ..
