Re: Cold Weather

I dont work ALL day in cold weather... If I have to get something done I will just work as long as it takes to get that thing done. And when I work in the cold I usually wear a beanie on the head and carhartt overalls and jacket. 2 pairs of socks and my work boots.

Once the feet get cold I call it a day even if I did not get the thing done I "needed to"

Re: Cold Weather

- 10* f. Sorrels, polar tech shirt with a couple of hoodies, (no zippers 2x and 6x). wool beanie. I could stay out all day but keeping something on the hands was an issue.

In the 70's and 80's in the ski town booms everyone wore galoshis over their boots. Sorrels were either not around or too expensive. Galoshis will get you down to -20 or 30 but your feet don't breath so 8 hrs is about max.

Re: Cold Weather

About the coldest I'll work in is in the 20's with windchills near zero. Wool stocking cap, hoodie, winter coveralls, work boots, rubber over boots if there's snow on the ground. I have one pair of gloves inside my pockets "warming up" while I wear another, and keep trading. I have trouble working with gloves on, so the fingers are the weak link.

Re: Cold Weather

When I used to work on a framing crew they would work in pretty cold weather and not stop till the air would freeze up (rare). In those times I had many pairs of gloves that I would swap off and I would wear as many clothes as possible. For boots... you cant go wrong with a pair of snowboarding boots.

Re: Cold Weather

Actually, I would say the lower temps have many advantages over the wet, soggy, muddy, foggy temps. Your feet can stay dry and traffic moving around a jobsite is better on frozen ground.

I moved inside too and it's usually only in the 50's around here. Personal choice.

Re: Cold Weather

Tried to work with a -54 degrees actual - wind chill not much less.

My GMC's 1500 watt heater was plugged into an outlet overnight at the office.

Started fine, but had to work the clutch/transmission to death for 5 or 10 minutes to get it to idle in neutral.

Let it idle for 45 minutes while I did paper work.

Tried to back up but the rear end was frozen, so it took quite a few tries to get it to move.

Tried to drive it, but could not get rid of the problems/noise, so had the fluid changed to a lighter grade at the on site garage.

Drove out to the dirt moving site (2 mile long dam) and got chewed out by the supe because I was not there to certify/approve the work he had done the last 24 hours. All the scrapers (15) and cats (4) were sitting there idling while I ate crow.

I learned that if you are going to be in the water with the sharks, you should learn to swim.

Re: Cold Weather

I swim with sharks all of the time. Why anyone would chose to live in that weather defeats me. I have a late 1st appointment in the morning and the waves have been OK for the past few days, I may catch some early morning surf.
