The Cobbler's Family Has No Shoes...

Was wondering if there are any other guilty parties out there who loath working on their own houses...

For me there is nothing more frustrating. Things seem to take 10x longer than they should and problems seem 10x worse than if I were working for someone else.

My wife is a saint for what she puts up with, to be sure.

They say the cobbler's family has no shoes...the plumber's house has leaky pipes.... the painter's house needs painted...etc. etc.

Anyone else care to fess up? Or am I the only one out there...

I haven't had my doorbell ring in 3 years

My "service" (and that's being optimistic) is a 200A panel, temped (THHN conductors in "free air") to a 50A FPE MCB...going on it's 4th year now

Outlet in the LR hasn't worked in 1+ years

I could go on.....but why? (see my sig. below ...LOL)

Re: The Cobbler's Family Has No Shoes...

I recently purchased a townhouse in foreclosure to rehab and keep as a rental property. The previous owner turned out to be an electrician I had heard of, has been in business for himself for at least 4 years.

Cost me $600 for my electrician to fix just the electrical issues that were either broken items, wired wrong items or just plain blatant code violations.

Celtic! Do we own the same house??????????????

I started changing my service 3+ years ago, have everything temped through the old meter. Sad part, 2-3 hours work and it would be finished.

My front doorbell hasn't worked in 2 years, since I redrywalled the living room and forgot to push the wire out the door frame. Drill a hole, fish it out, hook it up, could be working in 1/2 hour or so.

Air conditioner plug in the livingroom doesn't work because when I redid the LR, I left a roll of 12/2 in the attic and stubbed it down to a box in the LR. Another hour or so and it would be done too.

Have everything I need to remodel the master bath, have had it for 18 months in the garage and back shed. Some day.......

Built my house in '04, along with a dinky 8x12 pt deck waiting for me these past three years ...

Earlier this summer I finally replaced it with a 12x22 TREX deck - nice handrails, the works. Now we actually have some room out on the deck to enjoy our back yard.

That saying "cobbler's kids..." has been thrown around our house often enough...sad but true. You're not alone in this one!

Personally, - - I enjoy working on my own house (1900 -1905 Colonial), - - but the trouble is, - - I always start some new project before ever finishing the last.

A buddy of mine likes to joke around that the only room in the house I haven't touched yet, - - is also the only one that is finished . . .

No way to hide my guilt on this one...I would give you my wife's cell number, but you would have to miss a days work to listen to her list....build drawer banks in son's closet and reconfigured doors, still not painted and doors incomplete; need to replace 250' of ratty wooden fence, can't seem to get started; Installed pool two years ago with grand ideas for future cabana and decking, pool is wet,but non existent cabana provides no shade and the decking never appeared; and on it goes.

Re: The Cobbler's Family Has No Shoes...

Haven't run the front bell wire to the transformer yet, 9 yrs.
Still need to paint, 11 yrs.
Still need door casing on 3 doors,4 yrs.
Still need molding around ent. ctr.,5 yrs.
List goes on. Good thing is the painting. House taxes depreciated. City thinks property has been abandoned.

Oh. I did get the roof on 5 yrs ago.

Re: The Cobbler's Family Has No Shoes...

Well, lets see- My dad started building a house soon after I was born, which we moved into when I was in seventh grade. Now I'm twenty and off at college/work, and it's still not done.

The board and tar paper siding had to wire brushed and refinished before the rest of the boards and batts could go on, since they had sat so long that the finish had dramaticly changed color.

The house isn't done, but we already had to redo the roof, and it's getting to be time to paint again.

does any of that sound familar?

Re: The Cobbler's Family Has No Shoes...

Lots of stuff still to do.
I brought in a couple of my guys in January to paint the whole house (finally did my bedroom after 11 years), fix the kitchen sink, fix the basement bathroom, recaulk the windows, some tile work, trim work, yada yada yada.
we did about half of it before I needed them for customers. Ah, well, maybe this winter.

On another note: I'm a car nut: a real gearhead, and I love to work on my cars. I have yet to wax my car this year, and the soundproofing I bought 2 summers ago is still not installed. LAtely I am actually taking weekends off, but I'm too damn tired to do anything except watch the boob tube.

Maybe you have the same problem I do... Bringing your tools in to your own house from the truck, getting started, getting distracted, forgetting about the tools, and then going to a customers house the next day and kicking yourself for leaving the important stuff at home.

Sure I've got lots of pliers, cutters, screwdrivers etc in the house, but I'm not gonna double up on the expensive stuff!
