Checking Out A Job In An Unfamiliar City With Google Maps And Steet View

Sometimes when I get a call I check out the google earth street view of the building in question. I got another call today from a property preservation company. The address was on a street in paterson nj. Now I have been through Paterson a few times enough to know theres some questionable areas. And that you have to take precautions such as not taking much cash or any credit cards with you. And emptying your van or truck of any tools that you wont be using for that particular job. So I scroll up and down the street getting a feel for the neighborhood. Its not looking good. And what do i see on the street that I might be working on? Well. Check for yourself
Tell me what you think you see going on at the corner of north 3rd street and welcome street in paterson nj. And note the condition of the house on that corner,

I do not see anything going on, but I would not work there either.

Re: Checking Out A Job In An Unfamiliar City With Google Maps And Steet View

Thought I saw a guy approaching a car with his buddy standing on the curb in a black hoodie next to what looks like an abandoned crack house. But when i scrolled down welcome street turns out the car is empty and the guy in a hoodie is a fire post or something. And the guy in the street is just casualty walking along. So looks safe! . If they call me back ( i kinda overshot the banks roof tarp allowance on my quick on the draw phone quote) ill go. Just have to remember to tie off my ladder at the gutter so they don't try and recycle it while i'm up there. Only thing worse than working on a roof in Paterson is being stranded on the roof of an abandoned house there.

And no, thats NOT the house
Apparently the house i might be working on is next to "don't hate auto body". So im guessing there real friendly up there.!!

No link to check out, so no help there.

But, check out the neighborhoods financial demographics on a site, like Mellissa Data and find out how that particular economy is doing there.

That should give you a huge clue.

Zillow was the one I was trying to remember that should have been closer to accurate, but probably quite outdated with the recent housing decline.

Nice neighborhood.
Whats wrong with this neighborhood? Looks to me ... Look how great the OSB looks ... Much better than windows. Isn't that a ladder already set-up for me to get up to that roof? How thoughtful ...The only reason why my guys wouldn't go there to work is because it looks like rain today...

Re: Checking Out A Job In An Unfamiliar City With Google Maps And Steet View

No joke, I did a gig down in Moores Pen and Old Harbor, Jamaica, in 2001. I had 3 guys escort me back and forth from the hotel in Kingston to the power plant each day. At one point we had to travel down the A2 highway at midnight. We drove up to the edge of a huge crowd blocking the highway at a town called Gutter. Totally the third world. Road blocks in the way, yelling, gunshots, stuff burning in the middle of the road. They said it was a gang rally. We had to creep through the crowd driving at a walking pace. The three guys put a blanket over my body in the back seat and told me not to move. I remember thinking "If we hit someone or run over their foot and start a riot, I could probably run off 20 yards into the darkness, but after that, I don't think I'm living through this, nor will my body ever be found."

Driving through Paterson has always reminded me of my trip to Jamaica.

So what's the problem? I need a CCW permit to carry here, apparently you don't. Pack some heat and go to work!
