Check It Out. :)

I have a old time customer ( actualy my mother's neighbor, since I was a kid) he wanted a trench drain in his driveway. You got it buddy! Rented a John deer (the big boy) because the drain weighs 1300 lbs according to manufacture. Anyway, about 3 hrs into using the machine the customer calls and tells me franticaly that the town is coming by to look at the street in front of the house. SO? No permits or anything so I had to pack everything up call and get the machine picked up. Now I originaly hand dug the trench for the 4" pipe. = 6 hrs. Machine rental $400.00 /day. Now I know technicaly the permits and such are up to me, but this was more of a favor type thing (taking the job) because no one else would touch it.(He called 4 differant guys). So what would be a fair price I was about half done with the project. So would I charge him half or less? I was the one who aborted the project because I didn't want to risk losing my license. I'm hoping there is someone out there experienced in this type of thing (no permit and all) because I'm not. I try to do everything by the book especialy where I'm still sort of new.Thank you all that help.

How about your charge him the cost of the permits, go get them, and then complete the job?

Tell the city you are sorry. Get permit and face the firing squad. Do not repeat.

After 25 years in this biz I've never seen a license pulled for no permit .....however I imagine if ya got caught multiple times in the same area they might shoot ya down.

How did he know that the town is coming to look at the street? Either I missed something or something is fishy!

Yeh, I'm planning on finishing the job. And I truly believe it wasn't intentional that he asked the town to give him an estimate to pave the road he lives on. He's just a dumba$$. And I'm not worried too much about losing my license. It's just I've never had a run-in like this and I don't want my first on to be for something as stupid as this. Put it this way, I rented the machine to move the cement drain (6' long - 1300lbs.) I told him this several tiimes and he kept saying can't you just move it by hand a little at a time? What are we in ancient Egypt?

Something doesn't add up.

You hand dug a trench for a 4" pipe.

Owner or you (I can't figure that out either) is installing a 6- long 1300# pipe.

What kind of 4" pipe weighs 200#+ per foot?

And, what's a "trench drain"?

I've installed all kinds of sewer lines, Cast - ABS- PVC-hell, I even did one in tile (long time ago) Obviously cast is the heaviest, but 2 guys can handle it no problem. 4" pipe @1300 lbs I dunno what the hell that is all about....nor do I care!!! Have a nice weekend everyone!

Hey thom / james, I've never run into a 4" pipe that weighed 1300lbs. either let's use a little common sense people. The Trench drain wich is approx. 10" high x 10" wide x 6' long and the cement walls are approx. 2" thick. are we catching on yet? And what is a trench drain? It's like troph that is installed in the driveway, street,or where ever it's needed. You see them at the entrance to parking garages they have a metal grate ontop of them. You may call them something differant in your area but here one of the biggest cement product suppliers in the area calls it a trench drain so that's what I call it.
