NOT - Its an Urban Legend

http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/bus..._directory.htm

From the gov: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/cons...ts/alt107.shtm
Quote:
  1. What Phone Numbers Can I Register?
  2. Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry?

Yes, you may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.
You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don’t call consumers on their cell phones without their consent.

Re: Cell Phone

That's a good website to check for stuff like this. Another, which I think may have seniority, is www.snopes.com.

Now if I could just get the in-laws to use either one...

Do a little research and stop relying on emails that start with:

Thats why I never answer my cell unless I know the number or who is calling. If it is a number that I do not recognize I let it go to voice mail. If it's important they'll leave a message for me to call them back, then I will decide if it warrants my time. Caller ID is your friend.

Re: Cell Phone

I always try to answer my cell phone.
I think it's important for a customer to be able to speak with you. Especially a potential customer the first time they call.
I would rather not leave a message with my subs and I assume my customers feel the same way.

Re: Cell Phone

I usually answer numbers from surrounding area codes, but others outside of the area get the VM. I had a bad string of "credit repair services" calling me a few weeks ago. Very aggravating.

I agree, but I will not answer calls from area codes I do not know ~ obviously, these type callers are nowhere near my area.

Anything in Northern NJ and NYC [some folks call from work lines ] is answered.

Re: Cell Phone

I got my first cellphone back in 1991; a Motorolla "Brick" (8001M). Back then, wrong numbers were a seriously expensive proposition. Billing was per minute (or portion thereof) and the rates were ridiculous. I was insulating new houses in Calgary, Alberta and was one of the few guys with a handheld cellphone at the time. While it cost a lot of money to have, I was the one getting the calls (and a good share of the work) because the D/W companies I was subbing to could call me when the builders called in houses in the middle of the day...
Obviously I answered it every time it rang...very few people had my number anyways.

The bills averaged $400/month and it was worth every penny...my how times have changed.

When I started seeing every Tom, Dick and Harry carrying cels (around the time the first Motorola 550 flips were coming on the market) I was a happy guy...service prices finally started to get realistic.

Man I feel old...

Cheers, Ron

Nah Ron, old would be if you remembered having a non-touch-tone phone in your house.

I guess I qualify, then. We had one of these when I was a kid, and our entire phone number was 5608.

I have my dad's yellow pages ad from 1956 for his excavation company. Small town in south eastern Ohio.
The phone number was just "3 5 8".
And you didn't dial back then, you picked up the phone and the operator said "number please".

Totally Mayberry.

I do remember five digit dialing...they recently (last summer) made ten digit dialing mandatory here in Alberta...

I guess we're all "growed up" now...

Cheers

Honestly, I don't recall how many were on our line, but it was party, with a different ring pattern depending on who the call was for.
