Cedar Shingle Ripping.

Ripping cedar shingles to feather new ones in around a replacement window is a pain in the butt. I have a shingle ripper but the shingle above always cracks. Am I using the ripper wrong? Before I know it I'm replacing more shingles then planned. I try to pry loose then grab staple but.......... not so easy. Is there an easier way?

Re: Cedar Shingle Ripping.

I use a cats paw to dig in and bang shingle down, sometimes breaking the shingle into 2" wide pieces.

If your careful and don't destroy the shingle where you dig in, you should be able to pull it down and out. Then use shingle bar to clear out the nails.

edit, just saw "Staples". good luck

Re: Cedar Shingle Ripping.

I agree w/ AFRAME about breaking the cedar shingles into smaller strips to remove them, but I also found if you take a tool that is flatter than an original flat bar and hook the nails or staples from underneath the cedar shingle you want to keep and poud straight up the bar it will actually push the nail up and out. as far as the tool to do this w/ I have taken an old flat bar and pounded the not so curved end flat and works pretty well. Good Luck!

From the experience i have from cedar roofs there is no easy way, just some are a little easier than others. I just rip and tear with a shindig from top to bottom and go back and pull the nails with a flat-bar. These were very old roofs too "post and beam homes with varios layers of roofing" and we were not trying to save any shingles either.
